how long do you wait on a pup ?

I'm convinced there are a lot of young dogs that get sold because they don't start early enough..only to turn into good decent coonhounds later on.

I bought a 4 month old pup from a guy in kentucky once that at 7 month of age showed no intrest in a caged coon.
Now i normally don't use caged coon to get pups started because i don't think its necessary and in fact i think sometimes it does more harm than good if overdone..but i was a little concerned at her lack of intrest.
i started hunting this dog around 10 month old and she had all the appearance of being a cull...she did nothing..
i made up my mind to give her every opportunity until 18 month old.
One night when she was around 13 month old she opened a bit on track..but never finished.
I continued to work her trying as much as possible to put her on a hot track.
Finally one night she finished the track but was not treeing very well..I decided to NOT!! shoot down the coon, i felt rewarding her with the coon for not treeing to be a mistake.
then another night she again trailed and this time she treed at least half decent..i shot it down to her.
From then on she really took off..she eventually became a very fast dog on track and a good hard accurate tree dog.
At the age of 31/2 she was one of the best dogs ive had..
but sadly was killed on a highway while tracking.

I was just curious as to how long you guy's wait on a dog.??...for myself i'll give them a bit over a year..
.iv'e seen far to many dogs culled that wouldn't do much till then. only to have something click when around a year old or a bit older.

It all depends on what your goals are. If you are trying to win a world hunt one pup at a time, then it is like speed dating , they better show msomething fast or they get moved.

i agree with you brick kayer not all pups srart early some dont make it at all i know in todays bloodline theres alot that start start at 6 to 8 mons old but if you keep pushing them to the max they blow up and aint worth feeding i tried not to start anything till at least 10 or 11 mons old other than learning to lead and come to you when called little day time walks in the woods when thier young dont hurt i have seen some not start till right at 2 yrs old im old school i dont expect a 6 or 8 mon old pup to be nothing but a pup but alot of the new gen hunters expect a mircale out of a pup and cull them because they are not mature enough to put it all togather jmo

The thing about any young dog is the one thing they all need is hunting time. In order to give them hunt time you have to like them and they have to make that time enjoyable. As soon as you get down on one its time to move on. A spot as my dog is earned not given just because I bought you.

It all depends on how much time ive actually spent training the dog. During the summer, Ill put about 4 or 5 nights a week into a dog but during the winter, they will pretty much just run the yard etc till im done rabbit and deer hunting....and spring turkey...lol. I just make sure I give mine a very fair chance. Id say atleast till 18 months to 2 years.

iam in it for the long haul unless there ill then they get a dirt nap.but iam buying the feed not obamo

im with Ron...the BEST thing to see what a young dog got is just pure time in the woods...plain and simple...and i think thats where the problem lies...not getting them out enough....giving up on them far too soon...you cant hunt a good dog enough...

now, a young pup just starting...yes you gotta be careful and not over do it...but once the light starts coming on, you gotta stick with em IMO...and once the light is on and they are clicking you need to hunt them hard IMO....everyone got their own techniques to train and start younguns...


i just think theres a fair number of guys not spending enough time in the dark with that "cull" cut loose where there should be coons down...


i dont have an answer to the question...if they keep improving and showing me they are worth feeding, i will continue to feed em..

The dog I hunted this past weekend at SETWD did not "start" until she was 19 months old. She actually just walked with me in the woods until then... That was back in September. 100 coon later and 60-90 STRAIGHT nights in the woods and she was a DOUBLE-CAST WINNER and placed Friday nite Registered at her FIRST hunt (8 hours from the house). Every single coon she treed this past weekend, she was SPLIT BY HERSELF WITH THE MEAT.

DON'T GIVE UP ON EM TOOOOO EARLY FELLAS!

Bad decisions make good stories.

Sometimes a dog just doesn't have what it takes and that is unfortunate. However more times than not I would say when a dog doesn't make the grade a good portion of the responsibilty falls on the owner. It isn't the dog that the man gets its the man that the dog gets. I have seen so many dogs get messed up or ruined by idiots who try to start them when they are far to young. But like a fellow said above you have to like the dog. A dog doesn't become a coon dog just because you decide it is time for it do it. Eqch one develops differently and at their own pace. Some won't be showing you a whole lot until they are around two and have had a hundred or so nights in the woods. I would rather have one that starts slow and finishes better than one that starts early and blows up or never really makes a top dog.

Just my point of view...

If those pups dont start running and treeing by 10-15 months, they really aint to marketable .. No One wants to feed a dog until it is 2 and a 1/2 yrs old before it is ready to hunt. This is bull ... Some guys even know who they are promoting Junk Stud dogs that will not throw early starting pup..I know of several stud dogs that will throw pups that will be winning in the hunt by 12-15 months old and the are in high demand. I'm to ADHD to feel some pot licker that long. I'm am a speed dater when it comes to pups... I'm getting to old and fat to pup up with loosers. I myself almost Culled one of my best hounds. At 5 months old his sister was turning it on and her was a freeloader.. but by 9 months her was clicking and at 11 months cast winner $136 ... Locked in for the SS in 1 hunt and pounded hard for the next 3 years.

It just depends on what the dog is doing and if I think it is going to click sooner or latter. If one trees at all though I will give it the coon. Humans don't do anything perfect the first time and so I will reward them if they are just under the tree.
If they haven't seen a coon yet I might let them fight a little just to let them see one instead of useing a caged coon. Works better for me that way.

i was just thinking...for all the speed daters that don't have time to wait on a pup..how many would regret later when that same pup at the age of two starts winning BIG! at the hunts...i can think of quite a few over the years that were sold around and passed hands...only to start winning big later on......check your records...not all winners in the big hunts started at 6 or 7 month of age......

best coon dog i've owned in 35 years of hunting ringtails was a 18 month old top bred walker that had 5 owners we know of before comming here he is almost nine now and hunts like a four year old no reverse in him and is a great coondog one mans trash is another mans treasure now i gave a hundred fifty for that dog and he was ukc,pkc and paid up in perf. and ss. i have a wipeout dog i got this past summer for a hundred at 15 months of age i think he is going to make a top hound and is showing real promise people have no patience and expect to much to soon not all are young starters at 1 year old its still just a pup thats the fact of the matter and no two are the same!

Once you've owned a pup that will go hunting and tree its own coon by eight to eleven months old without another dog it becomes difficult to fool with one that doesn't .

The biggest reason most early starting pups are flops is because guys want to hunt them like a 3 year old 7 nights a week. Two to three nights one hour at a time or if they tree a coon, then put them up. This is all a baby needs.

As soon as i see something i can't live with I'm ready to move one.If it leaves here and goes on to be a World Champion I'm happy for you, congratulations, its still a good chance whatever I didn't like when it left I'm still not going to like it now regardless of what it has won.

I have been so guilty of haveing a pup that is bred to the hilt and by all means should be a dandy, and it is a flop. I would hold on thinking its going to flip any night and I would end up putting them in a deer pack .

It would be hard for me to fool with one much past 12 months of age if it wasn't showing me something.
