Big Game Committee Agenda - UPDATE

NC WRC Big Game Committee heard report on Bear Management Plan

Controversial issue of taking bear over bait has not yet been addressed.

Many thanks to the bear hunters who attended the March 6, 2012 Raleigh meeting of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Big Game Committee. There were more bear hunters in attendance than at other Big Game meetings, and it was important for us to be there.

The meeting was chaired by John L. Clark, WRC Commissioner from Clinton, NC. The Big Game Committee listened to a presentation by Coleen Olfenbuttel, WRC bear and fur bearing biologist. She presented the recent history of black bears in NC, with maps showing the expanding areas in which black bear populations are established in NC. She explained the method by which the proposed Black Bear Management Plan was drafted. Coleen answered questions from Commissioners and from several bear hunters. Bear hunters asked pertinent and relevant questions. The issues of feeding bears and baiting bears were discussed briefly.

Dr. David Cobb stated the proposed Bear Management Plan (BMP) had been posted on the WRC website for several months, with opportunity for comment. Now, the BMP has been taken off the website. Chairman John L. Clark directed Dr. Cobb to place the revised Bear Management Plan on the website so Commissioners, bear hunters, and the general public can have access to the BMP for review and study.

Chairman John L. Clark stated the BMP will be discussed at the Big Game Committee meeting to be held in the first week of May 2012.

The Bear Management Plan should be available on the WRC website on Monday, March 12, 2012. Visit www.ncwildlife.org to see the BMP. As soon as it is on the website again, I will send another email. If you are interested in the Bear Management Plan, PLEASE READ IT.

Note that the issue of feeding and baiting is NOT DIRECTLY MENTIONED in the BMP.

Bear hunters will need to attend the May 2012 Big Game Committee meeting to further discuss the issue of taking bear over bait. This is the most controversial bear hunting issue, and we know some of the Commissioners want to change the present rules about feeding and baiting. Our strong presence in the meeting today signaled to them we are watching them. We insist on being part of the decision-making process on any rule changes.
