Home remedy for itching & sensitive skin
Our house dog a boxer pug mix does nothin but itch herself all the time. She doesnt have fleas and has been to the vet and he gives her a shot of depomedrol which does work for a week or two. Shes so itchy and sensitive that if you even touch her back she starts quivering. Im just wondering if anyone has any home remedies i could try that might help

Jason how often do you bathe this dog? If you bathe her a lot cut back on the baths and put corn meal all over her then brush it out will clean her but not irritate her skin.
My bluetick female had the same problem , changed dog food to Purina Pro Plan for sensitive skin, it has salmon and oats, it has no corn soy ect and in a week or so she stopped all the itching and starting growing new hair where she had scratched so much, my vet told to do this and that she was probably allergic to corn !!! He was right !!!
She gets a bath once or twice a month

I was gonna suggest salmon oil too but you say you tried that and it didn't work. It sure took care of our dogs allergies. How long did you stick with the fish oil? It takes a couple months.

itchy dog
my wife shitzu has allergy problems she will rub her belly raw if you dont keep up on it and chew her tail took have to take her to the vet at least 1 time a yr she gives her a steroid shot and a prednsone shot she does good for a good while i keep some prednsone 5 mgs around give her once in awhile but if you give them alot of the prednisone pills it can cause cushing diease like b&l said benadrayl works also when her eyes start watering i give her a 25 mg pill once a day till she gets cleared up hope you get it strat out
If the vet has ruled out obvious medical causes, the most common cause is probably food allergies. I would try her on a 'sensitive' food, like Purina's. Second most common cause is shampoo not rinsed out thoroughly - it's very drying, and can cause tremendous itching. One of the best medicated shampoos that's available over the counter is Lambert Kay's MediCleen - it has the same active ingredient as some prescription shampoos, and should help reduce the itching. Just make sure to rinse very thoroughly.
If it comes and goes at different times of the year, it may be environmental allergies, in which case Benadryl should help.
Laurie

baby shampo works good
Thanks guys we've tried fish oil, benadryl, baby shampoo everything. Shes been fed purina dog chow all along im gonna try her on the pro plan sensitive skin and see if it helps

just a few ideas
try feeding her hills science diet for skin problems, allergies. bathe only as necessary. go to wal-mart and buy the alpha keri oil. will find in bathe supplies area. pour one capful into two quarts of warm water. rinse with this everytime she is bathed. do not rinse off! this will return oil to her skin. it can be used for anyone bathing a dog. great stuff!
