Wisconsin, coon hunting during deer season

Hello to all
it's that time a year again. The WDNR will be holding their annual deer hunting meetings around the State in March.

I had a thought that we should show up, and ask how long will coon hunters be punished for deer hunting violations of deer hunters?

who's interested in going to one of these meetings? follow link below for the when and where

In texas.i coonhunted all over our 2400 acre farm.........next morning go sit on a stand were i just hunted the nite before......always seen deer.....and shot many a good buck.....dogs go right thru the deer..some might get up and trot off...but would be right back......id tell family members how big the bucks were and where they layed up....or if no stand in the area were to put one,,,,,

hunted with one guy whose dog would run a deer out of hearing,,,cupple days later,,,,,,,,buck would be right back........

unfortunately in WI we aren't allowed to coon hunt during the gun deer season, afraid we're gonna poach deer I guess... I carry a .22 coon hunting, and if a deer gets close enough for me to shoot it with a .22 maybe I need new dogs lol

That's not true. Depends on where you live in the state.

I hate to sound pessimistic but you mention dogs and deer in the same paragragh, whatever you say will fall on deaf ears.

Posted by Dan Dogs on 03-01-2012 01:28 AM:

i think with being able hunt coon during in the cwd zones it should prove that were coonhunting and not poaching deer. i havn't heard of any violators in our area during deer season. i think the deer hunters will be harder to convince then the dnr.

I should stay out of this since i am not even from up there. So let me see if I got this right? A meeting has been called. Evidently, the topic is deer mgt. Is the meeting called by an Association of deer hunters on their dime ? or a DNR appreciations awards banquet type of a thing paid for by the Deer Hunters Association or the License fees? FRom us ? non taxpayers but we bought a license that might as well be called a tax because it IS a tax of sorts to collect up some muny.. Open Forum I recon ? They just can't wait to have coondog hunters show up at? Kinda stinkie, not putting $100 an acre into renting a triangular pubic land to deer hunt on . With that investment, the deer hunters want assurance that all they have been reading in the wilds of Central Park in NY Citay is as good as they read about in them magazines . I had a buddy , I recon got into deer hunting one time about the time he was getting into eating Brocholi and putting down meat.He asked me to cleanse him for he was fixing to go deer hunting on my great granndaddy's farm. So He stripped down at the laundrymat, handed me three quarters and dove in . I thought about it but I invested his three quarters and hit the GO button . Every so often his smiling face swapped ends UUGH. He went in white but he came out black and blue and staggering around, I ax him if he ever got that Fk'd up drunk on three quarters before? He said not since Ripple wine.

If they have the State furbearer Biologist at the show taking notes , you might be attending a legit meeting but probly not.JMO those deer hunter are mainly there to show off themanly hoodedness ,wild and woolines that they have accepted as a fact that a Deer is so mystical of a creature it can read your mind out loud and skeedadle, It can smell your methane before you ever pass it. etc. an so on!!!

Posted by madtomatoz on 03-01-2012 06:52 AM:

shouldnt the deer hunters be more P.O. at the cars and trucks that have killed more deer than any poacher alive . besides that we as coon hunters have way more cash wrapped up in our equipment and hounds . plus our license . so our veiw should over power theres. a portion of our equi.cost goes to taxs. jmo

Not called by us deer hunters. Is a DNR thing. We don't have but 9 days to deer hunt with a gun. With the discovery of "CWD" has came lots of changes. Never could coonhunt during gun deer season but like was refered to, we can in the "CWD" Management zones.

My dogs may not be worth a lot to anyone else but I value them at a lot cause of all the hard work i've put into making them what they are. They can sit out the 9 day cause it sure as hell ain't worth getting them shot over. Think about it, everyone and their brother has got a gun in the truck or leaning up against the wall and their first instinct will be to grab it.

down here in the cwd zone, if you don't turn a dog loose for fear of getting shot. you just as well quit all together because deer season last all winter. special season for this, special season for that. from oct til jan.

Not trying to start a war but I asked a warden and he said you couldnt hunt during the traditional 9 day hunt but could during the rest of the time and we are in the cwd zone. I wish they would just kill all them deer and be done with it.

okay this is getting fun!!!!!!!!

Good to see all the interest.

my mail box now has room.

got to run for now, will post answers to the posts when I get back

bottom line who can go to what meeting, you can go to any or all.
we need to get coon hunters to show up!!!!!!! and make the points for the record of the meeting.

this is a meeting set up by WDNR not the deer hunting groups.

the point is to let them know that enough is enough, just because we can hunt (if we get this changed) does not mean you have to. there are a lot of coonhunters that want to. and are tired of being punished for what DEER hunters did.

I have an email right from DNR officer Jeremy Plautz stating you could. I printed it out and carry it with me.
Here's his email. Ask him..

"US & THEM"

Personally,we don't hunt our's then when we can, legally. No problem with those that do or want to. I'm in your corner. Houndsmen & women united for the cause,"OF COURSE"!

Here's how I've always looked at it from both veiws, coonhuntin "&" deer huntin. I figure, I legally, can coonhunt, 365 nights in a row "IF" I so choose or am inclined to. Although I'm extremely fond of coonhuntin & have devoted enough of my life to it, I am also a "Whitetail Freak",so to speak,in season. Only option to actively participate in my "Other" love.
9 times outa 10, an early mornin obsession with the antlered beast's leading to 13 hrs in a tree stand will trump a late night of coonhuntin for me personally. Just wanted the record straight as to where I stand in the world of "Takin Sides". Split 50/50...

Since I have unlimited coonhuntin possabilities & bein an avid bowhunter, rifle huntin, smoke polin obsessed individual I fully can understand the desire to keep your ground as sacred as legitimately constrewed or anticipated. But ya see as a coonhunter, again, able to participate 365 days a year, I have always felt obliged to allow my fellow
"Hunters" their space so to speak. In the day of non-resident land leasin & the guarding of deer huntin turf in every way imagineable, for me to leave the dawgs home a few nights during that magic times of November is not an inconvenience in any way shape or form to me.

Now of course we gota deal with the,"Dam dawgs Scared all the Deer away","Don't step foot in the turf during the off season" bein preached by these deer huntin "QDM" geared huntin shows on one after another. My own experience in the past 25 years of huntin the same basic 5 x 5 mile area is, if we give'um space & educate they get usta us & mutually respect us as fellow hunters & exterminators aposed to hittin the "Dislike" button. Not a farmer in this country that doesn't HATE COON or anywhere for that matter. Takin them out is at the top of the list whenever possable & anyway possable.

"BUT"

Don't mess with their ground during the magic traditional opening of the gun season if you wana keep their place on your list of drops "UNLESS" they don't have a problem with it. I've always stood behind the "When in doubt back out" state when it comes to invading & crashin,in their minds,on somebodies or several somebodies generally, vacation/family reunion or culmination of a lot of money spent & the fruits of theirs labor at peak harvest /reward time.

Being a Deer Hunter as well I can tell you I don't want a bunch of fartin, greasy, smokin coonhunters on our lease either, which we pay a lot of money for even though I'm a "Coon hunter". We do turn our dawgs loose & not afraid to hunt it but there are them select time frames when it don't happen although I know how it shakes out in real time out there.

Two sides to every stand off. With coon hunters haitin on deer hunters & deer hunters haitin on coon hunters it's not good either way. Hardcore stances for what ya beleive in or matters the most to ya is understandable as well as our god givin rite. Give & take be good. I know,"LOL" rite? Educate them lease holders that are accused of so much trouble, as to how much of their feeders are gettin emptied by the coon & the $ they could save. Not to mention that secret lil cornfeild thats 3/4's gone before it dents.

Again I'm behind "US" & whether you wana hunt during gun season or not I'm not to judge if its legal. Our dawgs just to valuable to US & US only to even take the chance with two garmins on them & three trucks around & three foot soldiers in the timber with'um. I respect others passion & as they say,"$h!t can happen". I just try to eliminate them possabilties. Ain't a coon or 100 of them worth sacrificin my dawg. My descision & the only one that matters in the long run. All for it bein legal but gota keep in mind I am one of "Them" as well.

"MUTUAL RESPECT" kinda thang.......

I get 356-365 potential nights to hunt coon, so if ya think about it, we're purty lucky either way. I'm in it for the dogs & not fillin the freezer. Don't hav'ta count on coon for survival BUT there was a time when I did & I understand the potential loss of the peak coon fetchin time. Ya know when them guard hairs start gettin long & sleek, some have a frosted glow, just spottin them in the tree brings on a jag that only coonhunters understand. Been known to cause some game takers to empty several boxes of lead, uncontrolably & everyone harvested causes a person to grin "&" pat " 'Ol Blue" on his scarred up head & say,"Come on Bum","Less fetch another"......

Been there done that........
