coon population in west tennessee

How do people feel the coon population is in tennessee. more specifically west tennessee? i'm working two young dogs right now so its hard for me to judge it. i hear about people killing one or two a night in my area but not usually more than that. seems like some states killing five or six a night is pretty normal.

I hunt Crockett County and it's not like it was. Not as many coons I don't think. We didn't kill as many this year.

i haven't spotlighted near as many coons as i did last year. i don't know if thats a good indicator or not. for anybody that hunts around west tennessee where is the closest place that seems to have a heavy coon population. wouldn't mind driving a couple hours and camping out and hunting for a few days and experience hunting in thick coon.

i know things are gonna be tougher this time of year, but it seemed the coons were thin back in september too

where you live

What area of west tn you live. we hunted 3 to 4 times a week and killed 25 the first month. Just lucky I guess, we have NO dog power. This was on public land.

Around here I'm pretty sure I know what's happened. Poaching and during season people killing more than the limit. One big thing i have seen lately are people taking their best dog "Spot" out. Meaning a spotlight. To me that's cheating. I hear it from everyone. So and so killed 5 coons the other night using "Spot" or they just kill and kill.

we had a die off here to lead poison. you cant kill off your seed for next season. one or two a wk suffcient. you can't run a dead one. it's either in their blood or it ain't these days. thats with 4 o5 nights hunt'n an 2or3 trees a night if in good coon population. good hunt'n

not that i want to kill that many. limit is two a night in tennessee anyways. i just wish i could tree that many a night. in some places it seems you'd almost have to kill two or three a night just to keep the coon population balanced. definetely not like that around here though.

Posted by kirk b on 03-04-2012 05:06 PM:

thats what happens when you have big coon contests some people not all shoot everyone out of the tree around here in east tn anyway. shame.

Posted by T. Rich on 03-04-2012 07:48 PM:

this season has been a lilttle rough for me too. didnt kill as many as i did last year and it doesnt matter whose dogs or how many dogs i go with it still seems so much harder to tree one this past season

coon

it will get worse an worse when you don't leave seed females, thats why when you have spot to hunt and are told to kill them all or no hunt'n, you have to manage your spots, because once you've killed them all you have no place to hunt no way.
