judges

I definitely agree

Might as well say UKC remove the ability of the majority of clubs to host UKC hunts. Hunting judges are not the problem, a lack of honesty/ethics/integrity/honor, take your pick, are, for a few!

I'M NOT SAYING I'M AGAINST IT, BUT HOW ARE YOU GONNA FIND ENOUGH PEOPLE IN SMALL LOCAL EVENTS THAT WILL GIVE UP HUNTING TO JUDGE??? MOST PEOPLE CAN'T WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND SO THEY CAN STAY OUT A BIT LONGER!!! MOST PEOPLE JOIN CLUBS BECAUSE THEY LIKE TO HUNT, NOT BECAUSE THEY LIKE TO JUDGE!!!

Posted by Jack Bingham on 02-27-2012 09:38 PM:

A hunting judge has no more power than the other cast members. If he is cheating then the rest of the cast is letting him get away with it. If you think he is cheating call them out and ask for a majority vote. If the vote is 3-1 in the judges favor then you have three cheats or you are wrong.

what would yall complain about ?
#1 the judge was friends with handler A
#2 the judge didnt even no the rules
if you are a crybaby you will always have an excuse or a reason why you didnt win,
i could care less if its a hunting judge or not, the best thing a person can do to assure a good hunt is no the rules

The only thing worse than a crooked hunting judge is a crooked NON HUNTING JUDGE. The worse eyeball gouging scr... job I've ever received was at the hands of a non hunting judge!

Doesn't matter what the judge tries to do if you know the rules and will question or ask for votes when they are trying to get over on the cast.

A non hunting judge has a lot more power to screw a cast over than a hunting judge.

how about keeping the hunting judges, then the cast that has the winning card go back out for a one hour hunt with the master of hounds if the card looks dosnt look right IE: 1750 POINTS

It ain't gonna happen. Learn the rules. Speak up when you KNOW somebody is trying something. Quit crying and have fun. They'll be another hunt next week.

I've been around a long time and have hunted competition since the mid 60's. Back then there were no hunting judges, when your club had a hunt you either were a guide or a judge. Today the club members can't wait to enjoy some home cooking! I know any clubs I've belonged to in the past 20 years the winners were dominated by club members and then they wonder why their turn outs are so low. In the 60's and 70's entries were far above what you have today and we always came up with enough judges, it could be done today if it weren't for the greed. I'd like to see some figures on how many times the hunting judge won his cast, you can bet your butt it's a high percentage of the time.

I agree it would be high but IMO it would have a lot more to do with the fact that judges are often experienced competition hunters who know how to prepare a dog for a hunt and are usually packing a coon dog.

Just thinking about my local club and the guys that usually judge all have really good dogs.

I disagree, Being a hunting judge is a big disadvantage if you ask me.If you got time to call your dog ,keep time, keep the score card, answer questions and listen to bitchin, you shouldn't have time to cheat.

I get people at the clubs all the time that arent a member of any club and they show up and complain about hunting spots, lack of judging but they always turn down to be a judge when asked, dead line too early, deadline too late, etc ect... They don`t have a clue what it takes to run a club and the frustration it is on club members to make sure there is enough guides, and try to pick the best judges available that night. It isnt easy! I for one am trying to get more entries to our local hunts that have been low. Non hunting judges will not only cut our entries even lower, but is another thing to have to deal with to get a set of judges to the hunts at all times to judge these casts, and leave there dogs at home.

Being a hunting judge does not give you an advantage if you are honest and apply the rules to the best of your ability. In fact, I would consider it a bit of a disadvantage because you can't pay full attention to your own dog. Recording scores, keeping time, keeping track of where dogs are called treed to make sure they don't/haven't moved, answering cast member questions....all of these things as well as many others interfere with concentrating on your own dog. How many times have you been handed the score card and have 2-3 other cast members who have only been in a handful of hunts? Instead of focusing on hunting you end up being an instructor, or you spend alot of time justifying your calls because some novice doesn't understand the correct way versus the way they've seen it done somewhere else, or they get confused about which KC rules are in use.
I think that hunting judges may win many casts, but probably, in general, it's because of experience. They know the rules and their application better, they probably have been at it long enough to understand what kind of dog it takes to be competitive. The judge may not always have the best dog in the cast, but they usually don't have the worst one either.
Just my 3 cents worth (increase due to inflation and high gas prices).

Been to two RQEs in the past two weeks. Both judges were big PKC hunters. Both cast I have been a spectator. You know what happens, I get asked questions about scoring, time, timeouts, it is crazy. A lot of PKC guys, and not downing them, but do know the UKC rules. They are not that different but if you are going to say you can judge, get a score card and read the back before you go to the woods.

I don't think local clubs could hold hunts if non hunting judges were required. Now days you have 12 dogs at a hunt if you are lucky and most of the time you have a hard time finding a guide let alone a non hunting judge.
