The site looks good just wondering is there anything going on up in the northwest part of MO.

Mr. Muller,
The SCHM's 2012 UKC Youth Hunt will be in Cole Camp Mo. this year. That isn't Northwest I know but Kirksville and Higginsville have renewed their memberships and we are trying to expand.
We are trying to work our way North to include more clubs all the time but the best way to help us is for you to encourage your club to join the SCHM. I will personally attend one of your club's hunts and help you anyway I can.
If your club would join there is a good chance some others may consider joining. I know we would love to put on one of our major hunts in your area.

ANY CLUBS INTERESTED IN JOINING PLEASE CONTACT ME:

Josh,
AKC said Castor River was an inactive club and would have to submit a letter containing new officers/membership list and that couldn't be accomplished in time for the April 7 date to be published.
Another problem was the date, April 7 th is Easter weekend. The AKC Hunt requires a final cast so the hunt would wind up early Easter morning.

Hell I would have taken them to the woods, and I'm sure Patterson would have taken the hunt. If not i'm sure there could have found a substitute club found. And seems to me a letter with a few names wouldn't have taken until April to get from MO to NC?

Seems to me like the state hunts just keep going backwards year to year. First we loose the RQE, The MO AKC and AR AKC state hunts were combined, no qualifications fer the governors cup, now AKC State hunt is gone, whats next? That just names a few issues

Seems like the incentives for a real hard working COONHUNTER to spend his hard earned dollar on state hunts just keep dwindleing away.

Heck that AKC State hunt had alot of really nice prizes.

Don't want to sound to negative or take anything away from the state, but this is my opinion of what I see happening. Like it or leave it no matter to me!!!!!!!!!!!

Josh,

First, there was a AKC enforced deadline issue (1/31) that needed to be met for an April 7 hunt. I contacted them on 1/30 and gave them all the details about the hunt. I was informed that the club scheduled to host the hunt (Castor) was considered inactive and had to meet certain requirements to be reactivated. I tried to get around that by asking if the SCHM could host the event at Castor and was told no. There wasn't any way to get the April 7 hunt.

Second, AKC changed their policy about prize packages for state hunts. SCHM didn't have anything to do with that change. The attendance for that particular state hunt has declined every year because the prize package has declined every year.

Third, I heard the RQE was lost because we didn't have enough entries.

If a club wants to host the AKC State Hunt in May or later they just need to contact George Nash and discuss it with him. I'm sure he would like to have the hunt but AKC will not be offering a prize package. Also keep in mind they must know by the end of the month two months in advance.

Sounds to me like somebody needs to call and find out how many entries it will take to get a prize package out of AKC and call UKC and see what it would take to get an RQE back. If there is a set number then we need to know and get that amount of guys committed to being there.

I think there are enough guys out there that would hunt in both if they there to hunt in. I know there aint an RQE for several hours of her now.

Also think the AKC state hunt done very well there was always 4-5 casts.

I don't know all the facts all I can comment on is what I see happening and that aint been nothing but raising money for the youth and the shriners for several years now.

People aint gonna spend any money going to a hunt to get nothing in return. When it costs $100 to hunt in a hunt (Gas, Entry Fee, Food) there needs to be some incentive in winning and it just aint there anymore.

Josh,

_KC NO LONGER AWARDS PRIZE PACKAGES for state hunts. That is their new policy for EVERY state. There is no calling them and asking them to make an exception for Missouri. They instead award the package to the top dogs in their respective state races.

How many dogs do you think they will draw without a prize package?

A committee headed by 1st VP Dale Thompson and 2nd VP Scott Yamnitz was appointed by the SCHM at the annual membership meeting in January to look into ways to increase attendance in SCHM hunts. I know one of the options suggested was to offer a cash purse at the hunts instead of dog boxes and lights.

SCHM no doubt needs to make some changes and I believe changes are coming. Posts like yours will help make those changes but keep in mind what changes we are in control of and which ones we don't have any control over.

It takes asking the questions to find out the answers.

I think a cash prize would be alot better than alot of the prizes like dog boxes and such. Only bad thing is the state can double their money alot of time by giving material items such as lights and boxes by making deals with the companies. For instance by 3 lights and get 1 free. If they give cash they will have to earn more to give out the same dollar value.

I think the Govenors cup needs to be a more respected hunt as well. The number one dog in the state should be the one that wins that, I think it should be more like the Show Down and the Show Down be a little less of a hunt.

As far as the AKC hunt goes. I think there would be a heck of a turn out for an AKC money hunt. Even if it is a regular old hunt under the money format where the entry fees go to pay the winners and maybe had a little kicker in there from the state. And then the high scoring Male and Female could be named State Champs.

The AKC State Hunt entry was always a $20 entry I beileve. If the State sponsers a $25.00 entry AKC Money hunt the cast winners are looking at $55.83 each with 16 entries plus a win on their dog, and if they have a SBC dog that could mean some big bucks. No that aint as good as a garmin or what ever but better than a poke in the eye. Also if it is a Gold Metal hunt it could be grounds for quilifing for the AKC world or Nationals hunt which leads to really nice prizes and money.

I THINK I AGREE WITH JOSH THE GOVERNORS CUP HAS LOST IT ZEST ...I CAN REMEMBER WHEN YOU HAD TO QUALIFY FOR IT AND PAY A ADVANCED ENTRY THERE WOULD BE AT LEAST 60 PLUS DOGS NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP PAY A ENTRY FEE AND YOUR IN....NO EXCITEMENT THERE...AND IT SEEMS LIKE ALL THE SO CALLED SCHM HUNTS ARE CENTERED AROUND ST.CLAIR AREA ...AND NOW FOR AWARDS SPEND A LITTLE MONEY ON SOME NICE TROPHYS MAKE IT MORE INVITING...
LOOK AT THE FEDERATION AWARDS THAT THEY GIVE OUT....JUST MY INPUT...

Brian Jennewein and I had the high scoring dog of the year in the state coonhunters association a couple of years ago and we got a "certificate", looked like it came off someone's fax copier, in a dollar store frame. If the association can't do any better than that they should just close up shop. As for AKC, they are part of what has happened to ACHA, they helped screw it up, now their hunts and their titles mean absolutely nothing, if they don't offer some prizes they won't draw anyone. Everyone is flocking to PKC for the simple reason there may be a chance to at least pay for your trip, there's no reason UKC can't turn loose of some of the money they're bound to have and start paying for winners.

Posted by harry harris on 02-09-2012 05:56 AM:

Let's talk about the Governors Cup Hunt .....

I too remember hunting in this event when you had to qualify to be eligible and you had to send your entry in early and there were 70+ dogs in the event. It was the hunt in Missouri.

WAS ..... is right, it was also a different time then. Before last year (2011) the hunt was down to just about 20 dogs and the prize was a homemade dog box.
2011 the SCHM made some changes trying to draw more dogs. Changes like not having to qualify and being able to enter on the grounds and awarding an Owens dog box. 2011 did see 7 more entries, not a lot but at least not another year of decline.

My point ... SCHM didn't change the hunt during it's years of steady decline ..... it was the coon hunter that changed and that is what caused the numbers to drop so low.
Some members of SCHM can't see the coon hound world changing today and absolutely refuse to change with it. That needs to be addressed.

Efforts are being made to move the SCHM events into new areas but we have to get clubs to affiliate before we can give them hunts. I know for a fact 70+ letters were sent out last year to different clubs in Missouri encouraging them to affiliate and this year another 25 letters in the first bunch were sent out.
Nothing will turn this association around overnight but doing nothing can only have one outcome. I'll mess this up but someone once said doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity. And we need to stop the insanity.

So in 2011 the Gov. Cup winner got an Owens dog box. and the chance to spend a couple hundred dollars and missing a day of work to go get a pic with the gov.

What did 2nd, 3rd, 4th get?

Not sure if 2nd, 3rd or 4th got anything.
I do know all cast winners won a bag of dog food.

But that brings us back to my original point ...... years ago nobody talked about what the prizes were, they just hunted in the hunt for bragging rights and the prestige. The people who won were all to happy to drive to Jeff City for a photo with the Governor.

TODAY IS A DIFFERENT TIME WITH DIFFERENT HUNTERS AND THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE!!!!!!!!!!

But you will have the same people stand up at the annual membership meeting every year and argue AGAINST change.
