Fence height?

My wife is wanting the yard(about an acre) fenced in with chain link. Do I need 4ft or 5 ft to keep the dogs in? The grown dogs will be in kennels unless I'm out there but pups or a young dog will get to run loose until it's time to start hunting them. If I can get by with 4ft it will save quit a bit of money. So what does everyone think? Will 4ft work or do I need the 5ft.?

beats me , yesturday a guy was asking about coon pens and rabbit pens combos. seems like two differnt kinds of pens for two different kind of animals to me and now different kinds of dogs. LOL. seems like how its tilted would have mor affect than the height.

I've got a walker now he is full grown but he will climb out of my 4 foot chain link in a heartbeat he stays in a 6 foot kennel

if a dog wants out it will get out i guess. just depends on the situation. id probably go with 5' . id still keep my dogs in a kennel though.

The grown dogs will only be out of the kennel when me or my wife is out there. I just don't want to turn my back and one be over the fence. I had a beagle at one time that would be out of a 6 ft kennel before you got back to the house from feeding. I know if a dog really wants out the fence is not going to stop them. I was just wondering what every ones thoughts was on it. Bye the way there is about $1000 between 4ft. and 5ft. fence.

JACOB, YOU KINDA ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION!!! I'VE HAD DOGS THAT WOULD'T TRY TO GET OUT AT ALL AND SOME THAT WERE ESCAPE ARTISTS!!! TRAINING IS A BIG PART OF THE SITUATION!!! EVER HEARD THE STORY ABOUT HOW CIRCUS ELEPHANTS ARE CHAINED AT A YOUNG AGE AND COME TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THEY CAN'T GET AWAY, THEN WHEN MATURE THEY CAN BE RESTAINED WITH SOMETHING THAT COULD EASILY BE BROKEN?!!! IN THE SAME WAY DOGS COME TO HONOR A FENCE THAT COULD EASILY BE CLIMBED!!! PUPS YOU RAISE WILL PROBABLY HONOR THE FENCE, BUT A NEW DOG MIGHT NOT!!! ON A DIFFERENT NOTE, THE TALLER FENCE MIGHT KEEP A PERSON (THIEF) OUT, BUT BY ALL MEANS GO WITH WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD!!!

Makes sense because my hound wasnt raised in a fence a chain instead but the very athletic dalmation has never attempted to climb the fence

I just had a one of my few and far between thoughts! haha Does anyone make those plastic connectors for round poles that hold up a strand of electric fence? I could put a string of electric wire all the way around the top of the fence if they do. I should be able to keep them in if I get one that is an escape artists.

4 ft ought to do , if knot a strand or two of elec trick fence ought to do , if knot get rid of the box and plug it straight to 110. that'll knock a knot in one NOT to mess with my fence..

I think your fence needs to be at least 5'. Yes you can find insulators to fit round chain link fence post at Lowes, Home Depot...probably any facility that carries that type merchandise.

I have 4 ft and it is fine. I even have grown dogs in it when I am outside with them.

6ft i would worry more about the bottom the 1st couple yrs.
and put pvc pipe around it.the problem with the 4-5 they can
jump out.electric fence is against the law in some cities.

A climber will get out of a 20' tall fence .... that's why the fancy fences use non-climb wire ...


Hard to beat the economy and function of a 4' fence with a hot wire on top ...and bottom for diggers ...

I've had to put a hot-wire around the top of a 6 foot kennel before.
The nice thing is , they will only try it once or twice , and then you can shut it off.
Almost a waste of money to buy the fencer. It'd be better if you can borrow one for a week. LOL
