brightest light ?

im in the market for a new light & i cant figure out what brightest really is.every light has people claiming it is the brightest light out there.my question is lumens or lux a reliable measurement of brightness, like candlepower was?there are other factors going into my decision on which light to buy but i also want to make an informed decision & not just buy something because it is the flavor of the month.

The reason there is flavors of the month is cause ever 4 months someone comes out with something brighter. The Boss light comes with a Two Year Warranty and If you receive your light and are not happy with it for any reason just let Bruce Conkey know. You will get a full refund upon return of the light.

I don't know for the Boss and there are a few 6 LEDs Blazer, Bright Eyes, and I think there is a few more.

If you don't know what the lumens and lux output is, how can you make such an irrational statement? There are a lot of bright LED lights on the market. I would think removing one led and making a cat eye would reduce the brightness by 15-20%. led is not splitting atoms, its basic electronics 101, they are a lot of people on here who work with leds on a daily basis.

Is the output a secret?

brightest doesnt mean its the best. ive owned plenty of big money, "super lights" and some of them are junk. any good 21 volt light is plenty bright. i use a blazer tiny 21 and i wouldnt trade it for anything.IMO

Actually the lumens and lux can be manipulated and are very confusing without shedding much light, pun intended, on the subject.

You can take a dimmer light, with a tighter spot, and make the meter read higher.

The reason some of the light makers I have talked to don't advertise their lux/lumens is because of that very thing. The variability of the testing and the ease in which it is manipulated. It's hard to compare apples to apples with just a number. You have to adjust the spots to be the same size to compare from light to light.

But to answer one of your questions, the Boss is actually 5 LED's PLUS a 6th which is the Cats Eye so no they haven't "removed" an LED, they added the Cats Eye.

so the brightest light is really just opinion, it is nothing that can be proven?seems like that would just make it a race to see who has the most friends to pump up there product by saying this is the brightest light on the market.

I have had my Boss Turbo side by side a 6 LED head it was brighter. That is how I can make that rational statement. If I had a way to test the Lumens and Lux I would.

Yes the old 5 LED heads are 15-20% dimmer then the 6 LEDs made by the people that make 6 LED heads. The Boss turbo is not useing the same parts in the head as most of the others in the turbo. Think about it like house lights if someone had 6 75watt light and someone had 5 150watt lights.

Now why are other's not using the same LEDs as the Boss Turbo?

I think the reason for this is cause after we had the Dual LED head then the 3,4, and 5 come out some said buy our 5 LED head it is upgradeable and when new brighter parts in the head come out we can upgrade you head.

Jason - I think you have a very good grasp on the situation. Since all the 5 and 6 led drop ins come from china and use basically the same LEDs - a comparison can be made. Take for instance the 5-led that we build our drive current is 700ma and produces about 925 lumens and 30000 lux, we could drive the 5 drop in at 1000 ma (maximum recommended drive current) and produce about 1200 lumens and about 35000 lux - but driving with a higher current is very hard on the LEDs and in time the brightness will detoriate.

My suggestion would be go to a hunt, compare all the LEDs and make a determination. Or, check with Jerry Hawkins, or Larry Marshall they are both in Bloomfield Iowa and both make quality lights.

Tyler, You can buy a light meter and test the brightness of any light for about $150. Or if you are coming to the Grand American come by the Laser Torch booth and I will put it on the meter for you. The lux and lumens are manipulated by not keeping them at the proper distance from the meter during testing. That would be 1 meter distance for most lux meters. It is true that simply knowing the brightness will not answer your questions as to which light is best for you. Sam gives good advice. Compare lights side by side, in the dark at coon looking distance to be sure. What you want. A lot of people are making brightness statements about what they know not.

Excellent advice David. While a meter will give the lux output, it will not give the lumen output. The lumen output is determined by the manufacturer, first you must know the drive current, and second you must know the led family along with bin code. The lumen output cannot be manipulated.

The thing is the bright doesn't meen squat if it isn't a big enough beam to light up the whole tree or atleast most of it. That is what allows you to see threw the tree instead of one limb at a time.
I have been useing the White Lightening for a long time now and haven't seen anything that will shine a tree better. It is broad AND bright. It allso has the long shine time I like for staying out all night. I walk on next to bright and shine on bright. I never even tyr to get a coon to look once I get to the tree becouse I don't need them to.
It can be a problem for some in comp. though becouse you don't get to circle so many trees. LOL

I haven't seen every light out there but I can tell you my Sunspot light will light up an entire tree as bright as my friends 21 volt will light up a tiny spot when its on high. No need to follow each limb with a spot anymore. The Sunspot is a whiter colored light.

I've got a 28V Bright Eyes with 5 LED head and 5 position switch.

It's bright and stays that way. I compared it to the 6 LED but the spot was so wide it wasn't near as bright where you were looking at. When I got mine I talked to a guy there that said he was there to get a smaller battery pack. He said his would last about 2 weeks of hunting every night. So at 28 Volts for brightness and longevity I don't think there is anything that will top it right now. It's sure not cheap though.

Most of the brighter lights I have seen have a tight spot that doesn't widen. I like a broader lighter beam for walking and the ability to tighten down for shining. The LED's I have seen don't have the ability to broaden their beam for walking. The K2 head I have seems to be the closest in this ability. I haven't had much experiance with some of the other name brands so if someone can correct me please do.

I saw them on the Sun Spot thread. It looks like it is a good compareable to the White Lightening except it doesn't have as much shine time becouse it is a beltless light. If they ever get the shine time up on one that is what I will have but that will take better batteries.
I about never have mine turned down to what most people use for walking becouse I don't need to. Mine will go all night on next to high and high to shine the trees. I like to look around and see the deer, tree line and what ever is around. I hunt by myself so I don't have to worry about getting it in anothers eyes. I do turn it down when others are with me so I don't blind them every time I look at them though.

I have a sunspot and am real happy with it, really lites up a tree. Its only 3 leds. but i have seen guys with 6 bulb heads shine over my sunspot and not be able to find their beam. Best i can describe it is like shining a highbeam headlite from your truck up into the tree. About the only thing i dont like about it is you cant point out a coon to the guy standing next to ya because the beam is to big so i have started carrying a laser pointer in my pocket.
