house cats

is it ok for a pup to tree a house cat as soon as u let him out of the cage in the day time

i can tell you that most training pins dogs will tree a cat once in a while cause they feed the coon and you cant keep a cat out lol but i personally do not start dogs on cats but i know several that do and it doesnt seem to bother them i have trained a ton of dogs and supprisingly i have never had to break one from cats and we have cats running around everywhere like rabbits i mean if you let your pups run loose like alot of poeple would like to do its most likely that a cat is the first thing it will tree and i have never had any cat problems and ive only ever seen one treed while hunting and that was n a hunt

i took him hunting last night opened up but couldnt get him in a tree due to thick brush and little trees.... cought a cage coon yesterday morning going to turn that lose on him today

I got my female for free. I was told she wouldn't tree but would run a track. She was over a year when I got her. My first real hound for coons. I let her treee the barn cats a couple of times. Praised her for treeing them. Then I got a caged coon did a couple drags and a mock hunt. Praised her everytime for treeing. Last two times in the woods she treed two coons and put something in a hole. Last night I don't think she would have left that tree for anything. Dead silent on a coon track. But is treeing coons and all cause of some praise on some easy barn cat trees. But at the same piont if she did tree a cat I wouldn't be mad at her. I taught her is was ok just something to think about. But I am starting to get coons in trees.

well u can start em on cats if you want.
but i can tell u one thing it aint no fun to go to somebody's house at 12:00 cause your dog has thier cat up a tree in the front yard

i got him on a cage coon to day put it in the tree he treed it for about 30 min as a 8 month old pup and then we let him lose and he tracked it barked every breth but the coon ran 1 mile than across the road (scared me because my other dog got nicked by a car he was out of comminison for 2 months) and then the coon went under the fence and my pup couldnt get under and we didnt have permision to hunt there...so im going to hunt him by his self tomorrow night

by sight?????????? pups tree on cage coon by sight. i don't blindfold mine. ol well, all kinds of opinions and a blog board such as this anyways. i have seen several dogs started on cats and they did just fine. but then again they could see them.

I kid you not in a hunt this happened. We turned loose in a little grove and I won't keep a grove hunting type of dog, well mine flew out the back of it and she was headed across open country. Thank god for coons and telephone poles. Well the other 2 dogs in the cast were just messing around and for in another grove treed not very far away. When we go to them we walk up on the porch and there standing on the other side of sliding glass patio door was a cat and the 2 dogs treeing their life out looking at him thru the door on the porch. One of the funniest things I've ever seen and the one guy was looking under the porch for a coon.haha

i dont know alot but i think if you teach them to tree house cats you might as well teach them to tree every thing. me myself want a coondog not a housecat dog.

not a good mix

3 grown hounds + a stray house cat= a demolished screened porch and lots of wires and plumbing issues under the house and one not so happy homeowner. Bad night for all involved.

you ought not be hunting so close to someones home. cats don't run far and if you tree one your dog had to have gone through someones yard. and i never said train your dog with housecats. only said if they tree one as a pup its not going to alter the mind of the dog. at least you will know it has some natural treeing instinct. before long we will have dogs on oprah blaming owners for messing up their mind with house cats. ive been doing this for nearly 30 yrs and i have had some good some excellent and some bad. man how things have changed. but i have to remind myself that most that post on here have been hunting 10 yrs or less. very few old timers post on here. i do hope no ones dog goes on a house cat treeing rampage.

to tree?i would thank it meant nothing to tree in the back yard
sure we like seeing it.i was broke from thanking anything more after
buying a dog out of a trainning pen.he wouldnt even go when
we brought it home.

my uncle lets all of his young sq dogs run loose and tree barn cats, ground hogs, possum. as long as it climbs a tree he doesnt care. like the fellow above said its a good thing that they are barking up at all. if its a smart dog they will learn soon enough what you want them to tree.

house cats

i myself wouldnt start a pup on house cats but i got a buddy that has he puts coon scent on the cats feet and i think maybe all over gets his pup lets it see the cat take off and lets the pup run it up a tree but he dont let the pup get hold of the coon each to your own
