tree or dont tree
You are winning your cast and the closest dog to you is 150 behind but he is a nice dog your hunting against . the dog trees and you can hear your dog there but hasnt threw a locate and treed with them yet . Time is running down on tree nad you know your dog will be there. how many will tree their dog hoping it will be there and how many will be honest and take there chances because your dog hasnt really locked down . If i would have treed her i would have won my cast but i didnt and the coon was found . I fill good about what i done by not treeing her .
When we got to the tree she was belly up on the tree blowin it out with the other dogs . She took 50- and if i would have treed her she would have got 100+. It would have givin her her first win and a first place .
Poor handeling...

l.lyle , I have a nice dog myself . I knew i done the right thing , the way i don it is the way i would have in any situation . I am just tryin to get a view of what some other people would have done . I dont want to win knowing what my dog may do , i want to win by knowing what my dog tells me . I could have treed her but I dont want to win that way .
Depends on how the track sounded going into the tree and how your dog loaded up on it. You should be able to tell between the two if you want it on the scorecard or not.

If all dogs were treed except yours you would have only went in for 25. So you have to ask yourself is taking a chance on getting minused 25 better then taking a chance of getting minused 50?
If it was 50 , 50 I would still protect myself and go ahead and tree unless I was only winning by 50 or a quarter.
It's hard to know without being there but if the other dog had been having a coon I would protect myself and tree. Now if his dog was there for 3 or 4 minutes before mine came in no way in heck I am treeing because my dog wouldn't deserve any plus points.

I don’t guess I understand? You said you knew she would be there? If it is slick you get minused either way if you tree or not. If it is circled it doesn’t hurt you and if they have a coon you get plussed. I’m I missing a reason not to tree?
CALL YOUR DOG FOR WHAT IT DOES.... If its that far behind on gettin treed with them, then it needs to be somewhere alone.

If I'm understanding Mr. Trone correctly, his dog is treeing but not treeing with the authority that he likes to hear when calling his dog treed. Therefore I'm left to assume the dog was (me to) treeing, as he stated he knew the dog would be there.
Now If I'm handling in that situation, I'm gonna tree in for the last tree position, just in case there is a coon in that tree. His dog done told him it didn't think a coon was there but it wasn't absolutely sure as it had not yet left the tree and was treeing with less authority than usual.
By treeing his dog, he would have helped to reduce the damage created by his dog not being absolutely sure a coon was there.
I tree my dog to help protect all the good work it had done prior to this tree.

Kudo's on you for not pitching your dog. Call em as you hear em.
I TREED A DOG I WAS HUNTING WITH 25 SECONDS TO GO, WAS TELLING MYSELF DONT DO IT BUT SHE WAS THERE, BUT I NEW SOME THING WAS NOT RIGHT, SOON AS I TREED SHE LEFT WENT ANOTHER 200 YDS TREED ON A DEN , SO NO I WILL NOT TREE UNLESS MY DOG HAS COMITTED TO THAT TREE , I TOOK 25 - ON THAT TREE THE ONLY MINUS I TOOK THE WHOLE HUNT
NOW I ONLY CALL THEM FOR WHAT THERE DOING NOT WHAT I HOPE THEY ARE GOING TO DO

Wow I’m going to be big enough to admit that I read the post wrong. Yap that would be pitching and nope I would do it.
if my dogs treeing and i tree it i dont call it pitching... if he actually thought the dog would be there and it was treeing he let the dog down... pitching is when you know your dog will be there and you tree it without it being treed.... to me that is unethical but what he described is mishandling to me... jmo
Tim you yourself said your dog was there. In the way you described this scenerio in my humble opinion you cost your dog.Maybe not "pi$$ poor" handling but a handling mistake nonetheless. Now if you would have said your dog was heading towards the tree and you knew he would be there, then it would be unethical to pitch him in.But you said he was there just wasn't right.Sounds to me like you were just scared to pull the trigger and it cost you.I can say although I think you blew it for your dog,you are to be HIGHLY commended in your sportsmanship attitude in that you are ok with your call.Keep it up the wins will come.

i know A LOT of handlers who will pitch there hound in. If you do not know for sure or feel confident that your dog is there, YOU SHOULD NOT TREE IT. call it poor handling or what you may....i call it being honest. that is what this sport is in dire need of. to many chasing titles, money etc. im ready to get back to chasing coons. i hunt with tim often, and i will say, he likes to win as much as anyone else, but he will not be shady or even scrap the edges of cheating. if the only way a man can win is pitching in and gambling on a half hook dog. you may need to change whats snapped to your lead. and if you are so wrapped up in a trophy, you need help. titles are great i have titled out my share. but i let the dog win and call the dog for what it is doing, not what i hope it does.

Above is the answer; he is there but NOT TREEING YET. So you that treed your dog had to pitch. Just becouse it is in the area doesn't mean it is treeing. He called it like he heard it. HE IS A GOOD MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
