minus them

I seen it done

Posted by Virgil on 12-08-2011 06:41 PM:

Shouldn't be a problem to minus them where you live if coon are as thin as people say.

Not a problem here because coon or so thin that the 8 will catch a babbler a lot.

Yep here too. I would go for the 8 being moved down to 5 but we have the chance to minuse the babbler. If they strike it on a babble it better babble to a tree. It isn't hard to tell if it is babbleing or working.

It ain't really the babblers. Its these that are automatic strike dogs. These start barking and never shut up . Ever. They bark all night. You will not minus them on a 8 or 5 and the hunts are being flooded with em. Good thing is. Most are rattled brained idiots that can't do nothing but all of them ain't and those are the ones that will get ya.

i sure as hell aint getting use to it , screw those babbling idiots i would get rid of every one of them. and people wonder why the hunts have low numbers

Huh?

I thought the silent dogs were ruining nite hunts?

I absolutely HATE a loose mouthed dog, but you get one that never shuts up and gets under a coon pretty often and you got a winner.

Isn't that what a babbler is? That's what I consider an "automatic strike dog". They're one and the same.

What do you call one that goes crazy for about 5 seconds after you unsnap it? Then never say's another word until struck but goes on to get first strike about 98% of the time. Doesn't do a bunch of treeing ( slicks) but has the meat when parked. Will not back another dog for nothing.

I like it all but not backing another dog. I wouldn't feed one that wouldn't show me the first coon it comes to weather another dog is there or not.

It's a babbler.

If it babbles it's a babbler, end of story.

It's not a bad babbler, but it's a babbler. Don't get me wrong I could live with that, but I wouldn't like it. I have never hunted a dog you couldn't strike the second it opened because I have never had one with a babble in it period....................................until now.

I have the first dog I ever owned that babbles right now. Just got a new collar and am gonna fix that. Can't stand it.

I won't own one that babbles. He does it, he's still very young, and it's all excitement but he's gonna learn to use his excitement in a different way, and yes I am fully aware that it makes him hard to beat, but I DON'T CARE. I can't stand babblers and he's gonnna stop one way or the other.

I am one that wishes they would completely do away with the minute. Make folks strike that dog that opens on the turn loose and make em take minus as is appropriate. All the minute does is make it easier for automatic strike dogs to steal points.

Did I mention I hate babblers? LOL.

Posted by redtide on 12-09-2011 03:15 PM:

An automatic strike dog is one that barks off the lead.

A babbler is one who barks all over the woods and doesn't shut up.

A dog can be either or both.

If he waits til he gets out in the dark before babbling, he isn't an automatic strike dog. If he barks off the lead and never shuts up, he's an automatic strike dog and a babbler. Or, if he barks off the lead but then shuts up until he gets out and gets a track, he is an automatic strike dog. BUT whether or not you strike him is another matter. There are automatic strike dogs, and then there are automatic strike HANDLERS. According to the rules, you should not strike him off the lead and can be minused if you do and he doesn't continue the track. But, if the coons are the least bit think, usually they'll end up on a tree and you can't prove he wasn't on track off the lead.

The babbler is the tougher one (and especially if they are automatic also) because they are always going to get first strike when they are not really on track. That's hard to prove if they end up on a tree without the 8 getting them.

I too am in favor of reducing the 8 to 5 or maybe even 3. Every dog I've owned that was on a real track opened at least every minute or so. When the dog barks at 7 min. 45 seconds, he probably left the first track and found another.

Another suggestion....perhaps the rules could be changed to NOT allow a dog to be struck in the first 30 seconds. Just an idea.

I have completely lost track of how many casts I have lost that very way. It is hard to beat a babbling dog that covers everything all night.

If it is a true babbler that just covers other dogs all night and you can't beat it with a good hound your dog needs another handler. It might get first strike but it won't ever get first tree.

First strike, second tree=175
Third strike, first tree=175

Get fourth strike and first tree, you settle for 150. You can take first tree all night and if the other dog covers at the drop of a hat, you have to hope the other dog screws up, because it is very hard to beat a dog taking 175 on every tree.
