Slick Treeing

hey guys i have a 3 yo walker that has turned into a slick treeing fool..he looked good during running season but since kill season has come in he is slick treeing like crazy..hunted him all summer and he had the meat about 80% of the time. we have walked to about 10 to 15 trees since kill season started and not seen one coon. i like this dog but am to lazy to walk to to many more trees with no coons in them..any ideas on how to turn him around or should i send him down the road?

If he were mine I'd try this, get a 3ft. peice of black 3/4inch plastic pipe and I would show him how displeased with him on slick trees, would make him go on and find the right tree. Just walk in and check the tree,don't tie him or say anything (don't squall) if tree is slick make him leave, use as much force as you have to to make him leave. If he trees a coon pet him up and shoot the coon out. Some will come on here and tell you you will ruin him as a tree dog but I don't believe that. Nothing worse then walking into a bunch of slick trees. The black plastic pipe wouldn't do any damage only sting. The kind I'm talking about is what comes in rolls, not the the hard PVC stuff.

Have seen things like that happen during this time of year when coons are feeding pretty heavy. Really hard on the trailing types, with persimmons wildgrapes and acorns, they go up the tree with plenty of scent, but seem to lose it from feeding, guess they get paws coated over handling food. We used to take them off tree and walk a little ways off, normally they would hit the trail away and have him when treed again.

We had one that would slick tree bad if you shot coons out to him. He was very accurate if you did NOT shoot any out to him. Maybe yours will be like that.

I've been going through the exact same thing since season started. I've whooped and sent him on and whooped some more, nothing seems to be working. I've been real impressed with this young dog until now, very accurate and doesn't pay any attention to other dogs, during summer with all the leaves I'd say I still found 75%. I'll put him up all this week due to our deer gun season and hopefully get him straightened out before the weather gets real bad. So you're not alone with your problem, let me know how yours turns out.

Is he falling treed alot? If so he probably isn't finishing tracks and is getting treed where the track began..shock him on low and make him move on....if you know him good enough you will be able to tell when he has a coon

all summer i could tell when he knew he had the coon..but now sometimes i can tell when he isnt sure cause he will throw a ball in every now and then when he is treeing but other times he is blowing the top of the tree out with his fast chop and im sure he has it and i get there and no coon again..been awhile since he has had one knocked out to him i mostly hunt him alone going to try to put him back in with some good staight dogs knock a few out to him and then put him back by hisself and see what happens. need to get him right have a young dog i got for my son that i was planning on running with him because i really liked what i saw over the summer. but im not going to put the pup with him aslong as he is doing this.

you know now that you ask he has been falling treed.. did it 3 times this week end. night before last did it twice never opened up on track at all just started treeing.. i told my son last night i thought he might be treeing where the coon had come down..and a coulpe of times seemed like maybe he was back tracking.. he would start a track that sounded hot but the longer he worked it the slower he moved it like the track was getting colder . ive never had a dog do this so this one is new to me.

lol thats true.and the pup opened up on something tonight and tracked it for awhile..not sure what but he was on something got high hopes for the pup showed him his 1st coon at 4 months old in a box trap he went up smelled it and it was like someone turned the light switch on ..went crazy on it we turned it losse and he treed it got the older dog on the tree with him and knocked it out had the older dog there just in case the coon still had some fight in him didnt went the pup to get chewed up ..but he did awsome on it ..treed hard and stayed put and like i said it was 1st coon he had ever seen

For lieing on a tree, I DON'T SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE in purgury in court where the grudge trows yo as in jail for months.

If you find out anything let me know I have a female with the same problem ran her all summer through the heat and now that the leaves are off and it's cold shes a slick treeing fool and I ain't gonna just beat my dog for slick treeing at least she ain't running junk

I think I would try traping and releasing one. Might get it going the right way on the track again. Could be just running the track backwards on a coon tapping feeder trees.
If it is the only thing you have to hunt it will give you something to do that shouldn't hurt it.

Have been having this trouble with my old female she has been up for a few months though . I know if she don't start getting better I'm going to stop hunting her . She was very good before about having a coon but know its like she is just grabbing the first tree she comes too

get frustrated every year at this time when all the fresh leaves have fell and the scent is stronger on the tree then the ground... i have whipped stomped cussed and finally learned it only last a couple weeks and to deal with it.... truth be known most go thru a period sometime in the year when their dog misses way more than they should
