Birds Eye View

How many of you have spent the money on the down load and really use it or find it more helpful then the map ....

Paying to down load the maps then having to pay by the year to use it........Is It Worth It ??

Definately worth it.

Fortunely, I didn't have to pay for mine, as it was given to me as part of the field testing. But if I had to pay for it, it is worth every penny. I went hunting last night with a guy and his 10 yr old boy on their land. We were puttering around on their river bottom. He was asking me where my dogs were. I looked and asked him, "Do you know where in the next field there is a place where the field goes almost to the river between the 2 patches of timber?" He said he knew exactly where that was. He couldn't believe that I could pin point my dogs that close. Earlier, the dogs got across the river, which is only running shin deep and got treed. I drove right up directly across from them and told him it looks like they are about 50 yd in. With the Birdseye, it is much more accurate than the streams on the topo. The blue lines on the topo can be off from 50 yd or more. The BirdsEye is right on. I have until next August to download whatever I want. After that, as long as I don't need more downloads, I am free to keep what I have.

After one sees BirdsEye, going back is like watching tv in black and white. I would compare the difference like going from a beep beep to a 220. I am serious, it is that much better. I would not recommend anyone upgrading to a 320 without it. The only drawback is if someone is hunting in a huge forest with no roads or view of the ground, all you will see is tree tops.

At this time, our field testing association with Garmin is basically over. If we see a problem that an update causes or whatever, we can make contact with the engineers. We got no pay, just the fun of helping develop the unit to where it is today. Our compensation was keeping the finished product and the satisfaction of bringing this product to production. So, I am not a paid spokes person for Garmin.

My understanding is that the annual cost of BirdsEye is around 30 bucks. For that year, you can download anything you want. There are 3 resolution choices when you download, standard, high, and highest. The more resolution, the longer the download takes and allowable area is smaller. I would recommend first time users to download 3 or 4 square miles at a time, as larger areas take forever to download. Or start a download while you are watching tv or something to take your mind of it. lol

First time users can get a little frustrated until they have a couple downloads under their belt. One of the frustrating parts of being their field testers was that we had no directions what so ever. It was left to us to figure it out. I don't know just why they did that other than to see if a common person could figure it out, or if the engineers just thought anyone could do it. lol

The way I was told is ONCE you download the BirdsEye View its yours and YOU DO NOT have to pay each year to use it. The only time you'd have to pay for it again would be if you wanted to update your maps when they came out with new ones.

I just wonder how good it would work in our area. Where we hunt is pretty big woods with heavy cover.. I believe it is extremely effective in places where you road hunt or is pretty well open with little cover . I need to see it in action I guess before I make a decision..

I was told that there are no road names on the bird eye. Like the 220 where you can see a road with its name on the map. Is there any truth to this?

That is correct. When you run your topo card with BirdsEye, you have both.
