Help with correcting dog!!

I've got a 2 yr. old blue dog who has a bad habbit of checkin his self. He'll tree about 5 min. and pull off and check his self. This may be 5 feet or 100yrds! Leashin him to the tree does nothin but make him stay there when I show up.He's about 95% accurate though. Any advice would be appreciated.

he just hasnt got the tree part.how is he on possums

I would take him hunting and let him loose.Try to stay close to him so you can be on top of him when he trees.The minute he looks away from the tree use a switch on him.If youve got a shock collar it would be nice but a switch will work.Stand back and let him tree for a while and everytime he comes off corrct him.Just my opinion I hope it helps.

if you can catch him wen he is out checkin himself catch him and tie him there and go in the area you think he was treed and have you a party at the tree making all kinds of noise; shoot squall holler shine. continually do this always tying him away from the tree. and i guarantee you after doing this several times he'll know that you want him to stay at the tree and he'll make you a real stay put tree dog.

appreciate all the replies. Lee Currens- he's never treed one that I know off but I gonna say he wont. As of now this is the only thing holdin back from makin a real nice dog. He absolutly will not honor another dog if the coon aint there. Most of my dogs have done this but none have been so set on the track. Guess thats what you get when your dogs are track BEFORE tree.

in are world of thin coons he may make a more balance hound
that is what young dogs and pups do is check give him a little
extra time to settle.forget the lead and use a switch after you
get there poor the meat out to him.

p.s the possum is part of the problem

he still young just keep hunting him every night that you can knock some coon to him he should get to where he will stay and tie him at every tree if hes 95 percent accurate he should make it i would rather have a dog that checks good rather than 1 that grabs the first tree it smells scent on but i always pleasure hunted

Does he come back to the tree regularly and continue to tree and after a few minutes go check again or does he just tree for a little while and go checking and not come back? Sounds like a smart dog wanting to be sure of himself, maybe not so good for competition but always a plus pleasure hunting. P.S. If you get discouraged with him just send him to me we have plenty of thin coon and accurate dogs are hard to come by, but I would just keep hunting him and I'm sure he will come out of it after you build his confidence a little.

I hope you can straighten your dog out and I wish you the best of luck but at two years old you probably have now what you’ll have for the rest of the dogs life. If the dog is 100 yards off the tree he’s not checking to be sure he’s right he’s left the tree. Dogs are not machines that can be adjusted to work properly. The proper handler can have a huge effect on a dog but no handler can make a top hound out of every dog he or she handles. Some dogs just don’t have what it takes to be a top hound and any good handler knows and accepts that to be fact and will simply not waste time on a dog that don’t have the proper tools. Good luck with your dog.

Derrick Logan- He almost always comes back if he's sure of it. I do know a lot of it is a confidence problem. Most of the places we have to hunt are pretty thin or the coons have been run to death and tap every other tree. And ive seen top hounds pull up on a possum when huntin gets tough.

G L Weller- You may be right. I've seen dogs take untill 3yrs old to finish out and ended up makin nice dogs. Only time will tell.

95% accurate is about as good as it can gets, i would rather have one check hisself and have a coon then a dog that trees quick but slicks half the time. have you thought about hunting him with another dog that will back another dog and hold the tree? that way you can find the tree for sure, and when you get their find the coon and if your blue dog is milling around get to him and chain him where you caught him and walk back to steady eddy and shoot the coon out and praise him good and let the blue dog hear you, then i would walk back to the blue dog and lead him back to the truck without letting him get a hold of the coon and i would dump the two of em out again on down the road and do the same thing over and over every time you hunt him. i would think he will stop that in time. it sounds to me like your going to have a sure nuff coon dog though.

May have the problem fixed. Took him with my old female, who is as straight as they come and he struck it off and treed a good ways ahead of her and stayed put pretty good, and had the meat. Took the two again Thanksgiving nite and the same thing except he had to run it .6 miles and was belly up when I got there. Still wanted to pull off a little bit but I think the switch got his attention. Really believe it was mostly a confidence problem.
He's a real accurate dog who likes to get off by hiself. Should make a COONDOG.
