furbuyer updates

just got home from my first trip to the buyer for the year.Thought maybe we could have a post to keep updates thru the season.

Couple of things I was told.1x and smaller(29" and smaller) are going to be hard to move this year. And second, presentation will be very important this year.So take some time to clean blood and mud off and run a slicker brush thru(brought me a couple of extra dollars on a few).

I brought 5 on the carcass and got 1 at $15 1 at $10 and 3 at $5 for an $8 average

Brought 13 skinned 4-3x's brought $19.25 5-2x's brought $12 3-1x's brought $5 and 1-Large brought $2 for an $11.85 average.

So all in all for earlies it was just about what they said it would be and that is close to the same as last year except the smaller coon are a little lower.

I seen a big bunch of early Nerbraska coons yesterday at Jamesport Missouri brought $11.00 average. Anything 27 inches and down might as well leave in the timber.

Prices

Just sold 48 coon last night to Groenwald. I sold 27 on the carcass and he nose counted them at $13. my skinned coon I would have averaged $19.25 but he only wanted to pay me $7 dollars for three of them. I took those three back so I could put them up myself. Without those three low end coon in there I averaged $21.41. I sold 2 at $12, 11 at $20, and 4 at $30. I also Had one extremely small kitten that he wouldn't buy. But other than the kitten and the three hides I kept back myself I think I did pretty well for the early season. I also sold one stretched and dried hide for $25. I know that most guys won't get averages like this a lot of it has to do with how big the coon in my area are (check out my other post "The biggest coon of my life") and also how many coon I sell every year. My hunting buddy and I usually sell over 500 coon a year. We bounce around between three main buyers in our area. whoever is paying the best or treated us the best last week gets the skins. Also like Travis said never underestimate the difference that cleaning up your coon can make. I dry and brush every single coon I kill. The skinned ones get brushed twice once before I skin and once afterwards to get any blood that may have gotten on it out. Good luck and happy hunting.

cheap indiana hides are worthless any coon hunter 15 pounds brings 2 dollars a peice and coons over 15 bring 5 a peice maybe its because of the flood of early season coon but any more coon i get im freezing them and keepin them untile the end of season

More info from the fur buyer...

The raccoon is often overlooked as a valuable furbearer. Raccoons begin to prime up around the beginning of November depending on how cold the weather is. They reach their most prime around the middle of December and will stay prime until the beginning of February. Raccoons are probably one of the easiest animals to store for a while so getting them to me immediately isn't required just as long as they are properly cooled upon harvest. Raccoons can get green belly but not as bad as Fox or Coyotes. Raccoons harvested before they are primed up will get what is called "blue hide" where the leather turns a dark blueish color when they are dried. These early hides are pretty much worthless when it comes to fur value. Some things I am looking for when i buy raccoons are size and color. I will always pay more for big coons. Anything over 25 pounds is considered big. Also, dark/silver coons are going to be worth more than those with a yellowish/brown color to them. Things i will deduct for in coons include smaller size, large holes, green belly, and early skins.

General Guidlines

-raccoons have high and low ends when it comes to prices. Big raccoons (those over 20 pounds) will be worth premiums and high payouts the bigger they are. Smaller raccoons under 20 pounds will be nearly worthless and thus payouts will be deducted for small raccoons.

I don't know about Indiana coon, but in ND the coons don't look fully prime until sometime in December. Before that date they look pretty good on their topline but their sides and quarters are not prime. The problem of course is they are often denned by the time they are prime and hard to get. I wouldn't kill one for the furbuyer before thanksgiving in ND. A big fully prime northern coon is something to behold. After you've seen it everything else looks like junk.

I just sold 15 on carcass . Averaged $7.00 a piece. Prices were $10.00 , $8.00 and $6.00. These were Indiana coon.

Posted by ethan godfrey on 11-22-2011 03:39 AM:

coon are worth a lot more than what your local buyers are leading you to believe. they know if you dont have them dried you don't have a choice to sell. Don't be afraid to walk out with your coon if they are low balling because coon is sold out at the big auction houses and is expected to stay that way with china buying 70 percent of the coon offered.
