Bench critics???

This is my first time training a dog on the bench. I have no experience whatsoever and i've been workin with my young dog for a few days just gettin her up there and posistioning her. My question is (from the picture).... what do i need to focus on, change and how do i do it????

Thanks!!

trim her toenails and bring the leg facing camera back in a bit. you want the hocks to be perpendicular to the bench. other than that she looks good. good luck

make sure the dog can lead w/o having to pull you or her around the ring. leading on the left side will be best for most setups. take off the collar when you lead/show, gives a cleaner view of the neck/shoulders. if you can get you a show lead (cloth, small chain, etc) that will work better than a regular leash.

and yes, looking at the photo, the leg that is in front needs to be move forward a little bit (more toward the front leg).

practice!!! if they are having a problem with side winding (back end trying to pull around), gait her next to a wall. always keep the dog between the wall and you (side of house, etc).

get some small treats and when she does what you've asked her to do, then give a treat.

I thought a hounds natural gait was a little sideways. I don't know about showing either.

they can side track, but you can train them to walk in a straight line as long as they have good lines to begin with.

LOL Our State Tree is the Palmetto. The bottom dead fronds fall off year round. I ought to bundle them up and sell them as a training tool. They are dry so when you come down across a dog with one the first tjing he hears is the wind what sounds like a band of demons descending on him, then it breaks with loud crackling noise that makes him sure every one of his bones has been broke. Now that there gets a dogs attention that last for ever more.
