about 3 months ago i posted three pictures of 3 cc pups i would train this fall on squrr.2 brothers and a sister,the female was the brindle . this pup seen one drag she ran and treed it with style. then i released one live one again she ran it and treeded it like a old dog.this pup hunted so hard treed so hard by herself up to 400 yds, well my buddy came up from ny last sunday to pick herup. his words were in his life hes never seen a pup at that age do what she was doing.so now this brings me to the title. the 2 brothers have much bigger heads than there sister.together they cover ground like the wind if they see it they will tree it.the red one wilson by himself has got a lazy touch in his bones ifi walk he goes about 200 yds if i stop he slows down to much. not my type of dog even though iam over 60 years of age,now the other male jack hunts hard and more hard never stops.again he will tree it if he sees it, his problem is he trys to wind and track at the same time.which he turns into nothing. i told my buds from ny both will bit the dust very soon if they dont turn this around real quick. both stated iam being to hard on 8 month old pups.one thing i have learned in the last 4 years its 100 times easier to train a pup on coon than squrr.with no old dog. what do you guys think.

I would put more time in the two males. They can change a lot in the next few months, IMO.

thank you. the reason i asked the question is iam new at trainning squrr dogs. many guys on this board are 10 to 30 years ahead of me on squrr dog trainning.trainning coon dogs thats always been so easy for me.these males get on average 5 hrs a day in the bush 6 days a week. in the last 3 weeks thats 90 hrs. this is what iam having a problem with.another problem were i live we dont have a great population of squrr.its also crossed my mind iam pushing to hard for pups but they never stop trying.its also crossed my mind to give them a 3 or 4 day rest to see if that works.if they were doing that on coon after 90 hrs bush time they would be dust.there other full brothers are already running and treeing coon alone.squrris seem to be giving them so much trouble because there up down here thereso i think. the guys sure got me stumped. i guess if i was smart i would give them time till xmass and if they did turn out i will have learned something.

From my experience with both coon and squirrel dogs, dogs to tend to start easier on coon than squirrel... Here is what I have experienced... Usually coon hunters hunt multiple dogs, this tends to make alot more noise and excitement, plus coons are willing to run a little and since they are larger they do leave a whole lot more scent...

Squirell on the other hand usually are not on the ground alot until leaves come off good.. Also if you are training a pup alone there is not near the excitement as the multiple dog coon hunts.... Smaller game also means small scent trails.. And most squirrel hunters who have two 8 month old brothers and they are treeing game alone, even if by site, usually fiqure they are doing pretty good...

Also been my experience personally that females start faster anyway...

thanks. you made some really good points i hadden thought of.yesterday about 3 pm i headed to a 30 area bush with the 2 males. most of the bushes around here are maple trees we have very few nut trees. there is a corn field on the east side of this bush, i seen one squrr in 3 hrs he was feeding in the trees.we still have 50 percent leafs on. but the last 3 nights we got heavy frost so they will be gone soon.well in they three hrs in that small bush i counted 7 very large coon curled up in crotches of big trees sunning them selfs every one i would bet was over 30 pounds.ed roggen was up here last weekend and i showed him a picture of your male you have posted the red and white one. eds pretty sure its the same cc dog he sold to a guy in tn years ago. he told me the guys name but i didnt write it down.the dogs name was junior then and he would be 8 to 10 years today.if its the same dog its a small world today thanks again for the good advice on squrri dog trainning.

Thanks For the info CC. These pups out of him and this stephens female are acting good... I sold the last two females to one man and two days after he bought them he showed them a caged coon... They treed up on it when he pulled it up a tree and helped his old dog kill it... Not to bad for two three month old femlaes who had never seen a coon...

iam having trouble with my email.give me a week and i will see if i can get all the stuff you requested on junior. parents etc. ed roggen or george wood should have all his paper work parents etc. take care david
