coonhound paralysis

I have a Treeing Walker coon hound that has come down with coondog paralysis. I'm doing what I can to rehabilitate him. I'd like to hear from other hunters that have had this problem. How long does it last? Does it return without another coon bite? Let me know.

2 TO 3 MO. PROP HIM UP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND MOVE HIM SO HE DONT GET SORE, IT WONT COME BACK UNLESS A INFECTTED COON BITS HIM AGAIN, ITS TUFF BUT HE WILL PULL THRU, USE COMMON SENCE.

Had one go down with it last fall. Caught a big boar on the ground, fight was intense.

Two weeks later boy took the dog hunting. He got out of the box, crossed a fence and went down. He got worse for about a week, to the point he couldn't do anything. He couldn't even bark. Vet gave him a round of antibiotics and steroids. They normally get worse for about two weeks after the first signs appear. If they survive this time then the chances are good they will make a full recovery.

We started seeing some improvement after about a month, and by three months he was back on his feet and fully recovered except for the muscle loss and stamina. Took about 5 months before he was back to pre bite form.

Keep him clean, and turn him twice or three times a day. We put ours in the garage where it was warm on about six inches of straw and changed the straw every other day.

I had a cur/hound come down with it about 2 yrs ago. He never been bit by a coon. I just worked him on a few roll cages. The vet told me he didn't have to get bit. He told me he could have got it from saliva on the cage from the coon. The dog would crawl around on his belly because his leg joints hurt so bad. I believe it took around 40 days before he was able to take a few steps on his own. The whole time he had it, I kept him on dog vitamins and I rotated him on and off antibiotics. He pulled through and made a good squirrel dog. I have a video of him down somewhere I will try to dig up and post. Good idea to move his joints daily too.

I had a hound come down with this as well, it took months for him to recover. We took a shipping blanket and cut four holes in it to help teach him to walk again since he was paralized from the neck down... It was alot of work and took him aprox. 3 months to recover but he made it. Rotating him and making sure he got the meds he needed daily by the vet. Wish you luck and hope your dog makes a quick recovery..

Joe dog didn't make it. He became paralyzed completely. He couldn't swallow fluids.

Joe was a good young dog.

So sorry for the loss of Joe... the hardest part of this sport... the loss

sorry to hear about your loss, I had one get this a little more than a year ago, that was the hardest thing...getting him to swallow anything because he would often choke and it would scare him. I had to use IV fluids on him, this bear season he finally seems to be 100% back to normal.
I won't coon hunt him anymore...if we didn't have a bear season I guess he'd have to go to a pet home.

we had one go down with it 2 years ago. I didn't think she would recover. She did. she had a relapse after another coon tussle. She doesn't get coons shot to her any more.

She is still a great coon dog.

I had a nice young dog off of Nitro's Son get it. He got bit the same day he had his rabies shot. Double whammy!
He went down quick and never recovered. He couldn't swallow and never could take the meds. Tried popsicles and all we could think of. Vet wasn't much help.
He died watching coonhunting videos with me on the living room floor. Pretty sad stuff. I was heartbroken.
