AI and Dual sire questions

About how many pups are you getting with an AI'd litter?

I have a female that I want to raise one more litter off of.. But I prefer a small number of pups.. I just want a few pups for me and my close hunting buddies.. I own the sire also so it would be fresh semen done at my vet's office..

Also has anyone dual sired with AI?

I've also thought of dual siring this last litter.. How many pups are you getting off that?

I thought about just breeding her late in the cycle-but she's 8 and don't want to miss getting her bred. I don't want to raise anymore pups off her any older then that.

I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I think that Danny Glista had a dual sired litter out of Guage and Jet 8. Might talk to him he may have some info.

I have done dual sire breedings and lots of single AI's and I have a female here at the kennel that was AI'ed due on Fri. The male has no influence on the # of pups the female has. The litter size is controled by the # of eggs that she has dropped and most of the time, if a males semen is strong enough to fertilize one egg, most eggs will get fertilized that she has within her overies. As far as dual sire, I have tried it both ways, one stud one day and then another stud either later that same day or the next day and in that natural manner, never got a dual sired litter of pups. Tried it twice. Best way to get a dual sired litter is to draw off both males and mix the 2 males semen together and let sit for a few minutes. Then AI the female. I repeat it in two days and it worked well. 5 pups from each stud. Only drawback is to be sure and have kind of a thick wallet. DNA is $50 each to determine the sire and I believe UKC charges $50 or more to register a dual sired litter. Ya never know, she could have 10 or 12!! Good luck if ya give it a go!!

I know everything has be DNA'd.. That's fine..

I'm not worried much about AI cost.. My vet is super great and super cheap..

So AI'ing isn't going to get me less pups? It makes sense that you wouldn't, but wasn't sure why people say they get smaller litters.. That's what I'm trying to figure out..

The female has had 2 litters.. 1 tie & 8 pups.. 2 ties & 13 pups I only want 4 or 5 pups LOL..

I think I'll talk to my vet next time I'm in there and see if they have any suggestions..

I bred to a guys stud, went hunting, came back and bred to his other stud, got six pups 3 out of one stud, and 3 out of the other, it is a hassle, registries dont really want to mess with it.

Hey Melanie,
The potentially smaller number of pups with an AI is usually when using frozen or fresh chilled. There's at least one B&T breeder up your way who does "fresh transfer" and I don't think it reduces litter size at all.
The dilemma you're in is making sure you get pups this time vs trying to reduce litter size (been there, done that <tho' not an AI>, you had one of the pups...lol).
As you've already mentioned, you could try AI'ing late.....or early. I suppose you could also gamble with only using part of the collection, letting it sit around for a while before using it, chilling it and then warming and using, or any other number of creative tactics that will probably amuse your vet and friends.
Of course Murphy's Law says the harder you try to reduce litter size, the more likely you are to wind up with 14 pups.
