backtracking ????????????????????
Is it possible for a 6 year old dog , that has treed literally hundreds and hundreds of coons, that has allways been a good track dog, to all of sudden, start backtracking tracks ?????? Not one or two tracks but more like 5 or 6 straight tracks ? And I don't mean 50 or 75 yards, I mean half a mile or more .

nothing but den trees and brush piles. Every track now is a LONG, OLD, COLD, BAD track. And allways ends up in a den tree. He never turns around and goes back the other way. Strikes a cold track and never ever really warms it up. Cold trails for half a mile or more than that and takes 30 minutes or an hour to get there and then allways trees a den tree. Aint actually SEEN a coon in about 5 or 6 hunts. Starts to tree 5 or 6 different times on the way in yonder. Super wishy washy. The further the track goes the more trees he hits up on. Even locates good sometimes. Just quits it, mops it all over the woods, and ends up on a den. Every night now is the same song and dance. Its' getting old and has me worried.
I don't know. The way I figure it is if a dog ain't got a clue what's getting colder he still has a 50/50 chance of getting on the right end to start with.
Has this only been within the last week?
If so , I could tell you whats going on. But , unless you have a little ambition to prove it to yourself , you ain't gonna believe it.

spill it, what might be the problem?
My good english dog started doing this last year. I would cut him and he'd make a den. Then I would cut my female and she would tree a coon in short order. I did this for several cuts during a 3 night span. He kept making dens and she kept treeing coon.
Well I finally had enough of it so I went in to the next den looked it over good and whooped him good and sent him on. It only took 2 more times before he got the message
The only way to fix it in my oppinion is whip them and sent them on right from the den.

quote:i think the problem is the coon are feeding in the day time.. cold tracks and tapping trees.. try changing your hunting habits and start hunting different area.. the coon are smarting up to you. coon are like deer, if the deer get pressured they'll get nocturnal.. if coon get pressured they start feeding in the daylight.

The problem sounds a little strange to me. Why would a dog that had never had this problem before start doing it so consistently? Over the years, I have found that all dogs will take the wrong end of a track from time to time but the better dogs don't waste time turning around on it.
I have found that my dogs will do this more on a real hot track than they will on a cold track. I guess a lot has to do with the level of excitement of strong scent causes them to want to run before finding out which way to go. Another reason that they won't trail a cold track backward very far is if they hit a bad track, they might not have to go far before the scent gets so weak that they loose interest. When this happens, they should know to turn around.
Adios and Still Confused,
Gary

Yeah the more i think about it, i seriously doubt thats it. I cant see a dog bieng a coondog its whole life and then just start backtracking. I just think hes doing the best he can with what hes got to work with out there.

Can't wait for those coon unit Gps to come out. He could back track to an empty den. He could front track to a den the coon was already in when you turned loose. He could trail and workit up some and a coon knows where a nearby hollow is and takes to it. Who knows ? There aren't an over abundance of hollows in the woods I hunt though, thank goodness.

There a lot of things i have considered but whooping him for treeing dens and working tough tracks aint one of them. But, the thing is everybody trains there own way.

I ain't made a den in months. How much you been hunting him? Hunt him 2 or 3 hours a night for 14 days straight. Get back with me and tell me if he's fixed or not.
