You ever wonder.....
How many hounds have went to waste and never had a fair chance being hunted because of being in the wrong hands??
I bet the numbers are off the charts

I'll go ahead and fess up. I have a Rat grandson that was basically a natural, at 6 months old he would check older dogs and if they were right he'd tree with them, if not he went and found a coon. I got so attached to him that I can't stand the thought of anything happening to him.......... Yesterday while taking him for his walk he winded and came treed, yep 3 coons on top of an old house in our back pasture, yeah I know what a total waste of talent..........So I know of at least one!!!

I got 2 young dogs right now that both need hunted and I am having trouble hunting them both as much as they need. Both bred to death and doing good.
I have been trying to sell one and no takers as of yet.

I often wonder where and what is happening to all these pups that are being born because there just aren't that many coon hunters and I would go out on a limb and say at least 95% of pups that are born never get an honest chance to become a finished hound and that's a real tragedy!!!!!!! We as hunters owe these pups that we think much of a better chance and get rid of the people that are in it for the money and just the money and not worried about bettering the breed!!!!!! Jmo
Like POTOMAC said money has to do with alot of it. Alot of people are just breeding pups to make a little money. IMO the only real reason to breed dogs is in effort to produce a better coondog.

I give em all I've ever had a pretty good chance. They better take that chance and run with it though. Don't take much for me to not like one! Im not going to mess with one I don't like. They are born every day and I'll get another. I have a young hound here now. I've hunted her a yr. She's ok but just don't have a mouth like I want. So Im pretty much done with her. Even though she can run and tree her own coon.

Getting pups going and bringing them along is a lot of work. I think we have kind of divided into two groups trainers and comp. hunters. if a man is busting the hunts wide open he's not going to have time for pups and if a man is serious about his training he cant be at a hunt 5 out of 7 nights.

Excellent point. The guys doing most of the winning are almost never the guys who got the dog there.

I disagree with most of you, starting a pup is the easiest thing you can do if you are starting with a good bred pup yes (EASY)
i spend very little time with my pups except playing in the yard till they are 4 mo old,
but i agree with some of you i dont have patience for stupid cause you cant fix stupid, once my pup wants to hunt and tree they go by themselves 90% of the time ,
its about timing and putting that pup in the right spot, what i mean when im hunting a 5 1/2 mo old pup i patch hunt or a fence row ,
in 2011 i have started and sold 3 pups #1 was splitt treeing at 6 mo old shes in alabama #2 was split treeing at 11mo old his 2nd time out hes in oh #3 treed his 1st coon by himself at 5 1/2 mo old and hes in oh
when they are naturals starting a pup is fun and easy,

Most people chuck them pups in a pen till they are 7 to 10 months old or older pull them out take them with a pup trainer and wonder why they don't lead and why they are puking in the box.If you read 90% of the adds for young dogs for sale most is I don't have time to hunt, if a man isn't going to take time to hunt one he probably hasn't done anything else with him either. I notice you live in Ohio a lot easier to pick through those naturals when you have a coon population to expose them to. I also would be willing to bet you are fooling with pups from a specific bloodline or female. The playing in the yard till they are 4 months old makes a big difference in pups vs one that has not had that.

Most of these dogs bred today don't have any drive and desire and a lot more dogs will look good in Ohio that aren't worth the powder to smoke them in va.md. Are a lot of southern states in thin coon!!!!!

i'm in coastal nc and until last night i thought coon had gone extinct. yea, i'd say they're thin here. but then again, if i had a good dog, i might find that there are a lot of coon here.

i have to admit i have ruined a few by not hunting them when they needed hunting the most. i would say many times we have to many young dogs and we hunt the one the like the most and the other one sits. i have been guilty of this. we want to have more than one good dog but at times we neglect the ones that could have offered us the most enjoyment. now days i try to work dogs from start to finish before i move on to the next project. i still get bogged down at times, try to keep focus. and then there are many dogs who go to homes where they simply don't know how to train a dog.

LOL Alot of people think everybody is in it for the money. So show me the money. I sure don't see it. When I want a pup, I breed my own for me. Before I do it I already have people that want one of those pups. Out of those, only two deliver, the rest are no shows. That leaves me with four or five ravenous pups by the time they are 4 months old and I might take $100 to get them off the feed bill. LOL They can use them on Coons, Hogs or possums or yard dogs for all I know. At least I got the pick of the litter.
