Well you can take this for what its worth. I know where a 40 ac pen is. Been there for yrs now. All they eat is chocolate. It ain't killed them coon. If your in the south and your coons are gone. Its either the bullet or distemper. That's my thoughts on it. All I feed is the candy now. Swapped off it for a few yrs and used old bread. That's when our coons got gone. I know the bullet didn't get em. It was distemper. Dang near wiped them out.

distemper has hit hard around here

Posted by coonhunter2009 on 08-10-2011 03:55 AM:

If it's distemper then why keep feeding them ? unless your traning a lot of pup's iam just asking a ? so i don't need no smart a$$ remarks and iam not trying to start anything lol just a ?

Posted by GA DAWG on 08-10-2011 04:03 AM:

We stopped for a long time. Its not everlasting. If you get it. A feeder is your worst enemy. That's a fact. We are getting a few back now. It was about 5 yrs ago when it came through our section of the state pretty bad. I don't like feeding dog food cause coyotes eat it pretty bad and they are the number 1 carrier of distemper so I hear.

Just out of curiosity how many coons are shot out a year down your way Ga Dawg? Around here in Sc they were being shot out everytime they treed several years ago. With a weak population on top of sickness, coon population has paid the price.

No one meant to be a smart ass brother. We ~ or I anyway ~ was trying to keep the thread up. Doug and I sell Carolina Coon Candy. I wanted to hear responses.

If Distemper is around, a feeder would be the best way to spread it faster than it would normally, due to the numbers coming into it. But I believe it is Feline Distemper that the coons get, and not the Canine type. A few years back, I had heard of cats coming down with it, wasn't long before we started running into sick coons in that area.

Chocolate is poisonous to many animals. In fact, our DNR tried to stop chocolate used in bear baits due to it killing bear cubs. Small amounts don't harm full grown bears, but the idea of never enough chocolate does not apply to animals.

Here is a link describing the toxicity of chocolate to dogs.

Here is another good source.

Coon will leave any feeder for wild cherries, black berries and a good sweet corn patch then the white oaks during the late summer and fall. Coon will re-apear to the feeder when the good natural food source is deminished. Im surprised no ones picked up on that. They will not depend 100% on any feeder all year long.

heres a thought if somoeone feeds dog food say 18% protien and feeds year around or corn i believe it is about 8 or 9% if you feed year around and then stop can you effect a coons metabilism and get his body used to the high protien then when you stop feeding he can not find this protien content in the wild off of acorns and berries could it not cause him to starve just a thought

Posted by punky bruster on 08-10-2011 11:45 PM:

If u got to have a feeder its time to quit hunting. Some people say they use them for pups but a few of the best pup trainers around never use a feeder they just use a true coondog to train with

Posted by GA DAWG on 08-11-2011 12:31 AM:

Hey punky. I don't just use mine for pups. So anytime you wanna make trip over here where feeders are the norm from about march through june. We can show you how these cull feeder bucket dogs do. Bring your power around Oct 15. The wma up here beside the house will be open. Its 28000 ac. Gonna need a get through yonder coon treeing dog on it. So if you want to see coons over something other than our feeder dogs. You better be looking for something!
