Need some help with training.

I have a well balanced reddog 2 years old that was lightly started when I got him. I have had him maybe 5 months and the man that started him did a great job. So here is my problem. When I hunt him with my buddies dog he is so independant he will not back. When we hunt together it is in the bottoms and my dog will not hunt deep at all. On the mtn. he is gone get treed and does it with style with or without company but in the bottoms he is no go. He gets hunted by himself or with pups so I know where the independent part comes from but why will he not hunt the bottoms. He is not affraid of the water at all he just will not hunt deep.

Someone give me some ideas please.
