Not trying to sound like a smart ass but he is only 8 months old. If he is running track well at that age he should come around.
Have you hunted him any by himself?? I've seen some young dogs learn that they can just mill around and let the old dogs tree and still get a taste of the coon.

Sounds to me like he needs meat in his mouth, I've straighten a few out for folks that would do that, i would hunt him by hisself an start poppin them out to him there's would usually tree for a Lil while but quit, I would stay rite with em even if I had to run. In once they treed work em a Lil then pop it out then maybe hang it in a tree an mess with em again.
i have took him by hisself but its so hot and dry down here right it dont do him any good i took him the other night and cut him by hisself and he struck a bad track and ran it but when he got it on the ridge he couldnt do anything with it and quit i dont wanna push him in this heat and it being so dry and all but i really dont wanna give him a coon if he dont tree it seems like that would be defeating the purpose of it,,that would make him depend on the other dogs to finish the track and ivin it to him would make him any better at treein in my opinion..but once i get to the tree he'll start treein up,but just stands there around the tree when i'm goin in accordin to my garmin..but i know it'll all come to him,,just gotta give it time

i would hunt him by hisself and around water this time of year, a young dog will tackle to tough a track sometimes but the only way they can learn is by doing it. when he starts treeing them hard ones youll have a coon dog.
quote:i caught a coon the other day and me and my buddies put a collar him and tied a rope to him and turnt him loose and turnt my pup behind him he treed and did great but he was lookin at it and i would pull the coon down the tree and let it run back up so to excite him more he did good,,but i know he's goona make a coondog but idk maybe i just wanna help push him along to make it easier..

sounds to me like he is treeing when the scent is right
on the tree for him.i wouldnt try a whole lot just expose
him.
give him time an hunt him or if you want to just mayby get rid of him give me a call 828 7797810 been wanting a young dog off cutter
its been so hot down here when he does tree he only trees for a couple minutes and then he gets too hot and starts jumpin so i really dont wanna hunt him due to that cause i dont want to get him used to jumpin on the tree

The pup is probably only treeing when he is sure the coon is there. The dry conditions along with the old dog beating him there is probably making it tough on him. Experience will probably help.

Got to remember that he's a puppy still! If it's dry scent will leave alot quicker! Plus it's hott, the heat alone will make him not want to tree. I wouldn't push him real hard right now, hunt him 1 or 2 times a week, and try to give him the ones he tree's on, to get his confidence up. The saying goes you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Be patient he will be fine!
