Lymes Disease?

Has any of you guys had a dog get lymes didease and how did the dog hunt when it had it?

Lyme's

I don't know about Lyme's disease but, I had one come down with Rocky Mountain Tick Fever. It knocked him back pretty good. We realized it in January. Went through two months of Doxycycline and two more meds. I still don't hunt him very hard. If you try to over hunt him he'll quit on ya. Know a guy that's treating one with Lyme's. If he's out of his medication you can really tell. Know of one that had Erlicia. It took two years for him to get over it. You can expect it to slow em down, not tree as hard and pull up short. Another thing I would keep a close watch on is the dogs ears. I don't know if its the antibiotics or coincedence. But, I've seen em get yeast infections while taking the medication. My Uncle and a woman from this area had Lyme's is was hard on em. I don't think they ever completely get rid of it. Go buy some Bayer cow ear tags. Put em their collars and kill the ticks when they bite. They will last about three months. I learned the hard way how important they are. I haven't picked a tick off since I started using em. Good luck and keep the dog layed up for a while.

My GR.Nt.Ch. came down with Lyme Disease 3 yrs. ago.Trust me,-----it is some really bad disease.He is (or should I say WAS) one helluva coondog.Now,don't git me wrong,he still has the drive he used to have.He just doesn't have the stamina.Nowadays if I hunt him,I will only make 1 drop and he will be so outta breath that you think he's gonna keel over and die.One other thing I would like to mention.Ever since he came down with the disease,his mouth is nowhere even close to what it was.Not for sure if it was the disease that caused it----but I can think of no other reason why it isn't.Hope your hound pulls thru it better'n mine did.Best of luck to ya.

The college ag department did a study. Its not known how long they need to stay on medication. They did determine one month of meds are not enough. They say it will retreat into the bone marrow and resurface under any stress the dog is put under. So two continuous months may be neccessary.

I had her on whatever meds the vet had me give her for 30 days and no joke the next day I took her off them she wouldn't hardly hunt. She will tree some easy coon but that's about it.

It really sucks because I entered her in autum oaks and got her qualified again this year and was going to go to PA. But I just can't see hauling a dog and wasting my money when she is hunting at about 20%

i have had 2 dogs get lyme and it did not bother them too bad i got lyme and believe me it is nasty after dealing with it personally i would not want man or beast to have it i had my hounds given shots good luck

We have a dog going through it right now. She tested positive but our vet said that since she had no symptoms there was no reason to treat her. Needless to say less than 2 months later she developed symptoms so bad that we almost lost her. She had to spend 10 days at the vet on IV's, and now that she is home she is on 5 medicines and just in the last 3 days has started to wobble around on her swollen feet. Someone else mentioned that their dog lost his voice, Penny has lost her's also. She will throw her head back and bark and you can hardly hear her from 2 ft. away. If you have any other dogs I suggest testing them, we did and one other tested positive, he is now on doxy and the other 2 tested negitive and we got them vaccinated for lyme. We figured the total cost of the vaccine of $80 is better then the close to $1200 we now have in Penny with vet bills and medicine. Good luck with her and her treatment. I feel for both of you!!

You wont always see the typical symtoms....We as coonhunters can tell if a dog is operating a little 'off' more than your average pet owner.

The treatment cost less than the test for it...

Dont expect a dog that has it to come back %100...Im sure some do, but a lot loose a step.

Team Trouble

i have a hunttin buddy that has a dog that has it it took all the fire out of him been treaty him for it about 3 months i have it myself and it sucks if works on the dogs like it does the humans i feel sorry for them i hurt all the time take 2 hand full of pills a day

I had my dog to the vet this mourning. He just did a screening with a blood sample. He said she tested a weak positive for lymes and positive for heart worm... He is sending the bloodwork into the lab for testing to confirm both. I had my dog tested last year for heartworm and it was negative and I put her on ivermec about 6 months ago. He said she could have easily developed heart worm during those months. Any idea what it will cost me to get her treated for heart worm at an early stage?
