i start feeding mush at 3 weeks & i wean all my pups at 4 weeks old. get you a blender, caned milk & puppy chow. mix it not to thin & not to thick but just kinda watery. boy this is hard to explain. texture kinda like a can of paint. maybe just a very little thiner. your pup wont miss a beat & grow just right. not to fast or to slow. feed it 3 times a day & at 5 weeks you can start leaving a little dry food without waisting it after feeding mush. 6 weeks just leave it dry feed & give its milk in a bowl twice a day.

dont forget water. they will start to drink alittle water at 4 weeks.

has worked for me for years. straight legs & good feet.

In my opinion

Yes it's too young. Not sure why a breeder would consent to that.....

Odd that a breeder would let a pup go that young. We never let ours leave until they are at the eight week mark or older. We put a lot on socialization with our pups and a good foundation. Four weeks old is awful young.

I agree with Christy. Anytime we have a pup that comes to our house we keep it in the house. We have a shepherd and several hounds that mother it to death plus it gets great socialization and plenty to eat. We use a blender too and mix in milk replacer with puppy food for when they are that young and continue with the milk replacer until they are six months old. We feed puppy food until they are a year old and then switch. It works wonders and they are always healthy and strong.

I feel its to young, must be a preference thing. If im not going to hunt the mother of any pups I raise I let the pups stay with her till way past 6 weeks(unless someone wants to pick one up) of age or sometimes untill the mother weans them herself. Ive never had a sick pup this way nor have I ever seen any shy pups,,of any strain or breed by using this methode. (no guarentees tho). Thats a judgment call.

For proper dog socialization to take place, it is highly recommended that the pups stay together until they are 49 days old = 7 weeks.

Dog socialization basically means learns how to be a dog.

Oh yes, they do just fine and turn out well if circumstance makes it necessary to take them early-- and it does happen for good reasons.

if you read the post......he said he really didn't have a choice but to get the pup early. This doesn't mean the breeder is getting rid of all of them at 4 weeks. I have one in my kennel i had to get around the 4 week mark. He is doing fine and is a hard hunting dog. And besides, no one should depend on the breeder to socialize your pup. That needs to come from the OWNER. Do i think its early? In most cases yes. But when you either get it now or not at all......well i think the pup will be fine. Lots of care and right feed, it will do fine.

Lee,

You lost me with your response.

Amazing,

What I said doesn't have to do with people socializing a puppy. It has to do with its mother and litter mates socializing the puppy to be a dog.

Yes, some dogs will do fine when not handed to the best of circumstances, but more times than not that is not the case.

Hey, I notice your posts are a lot about hurrying up the process. If you are going to be a serious dog hunter there are not many shortcuts to a well trained dog. Keep reading on here for training ideas but steer clear of those who say they know how to work miracles to get a hound going super early. Getting a four week old pup is really young, get ready for lots of vet care if it gets sick or worms. Why not wait another month and let this batch of pups get through the weaning stage and trotting around ready to learn?
This is not like ordering a meal at McD's, dogs have to grow and learn with training and there are lots of methods to do both but I would caution you not to try to hurry up the process. A good dog will be around for ten or more years so you can mess a dog up by pushing to hard and fast.

Yes primary socialization is between 3 to 5 weeks whereas secondary is 5 to 12 weeks. This is canine to canine. The breeder does have responsibilities to the socialization of human/canine and anything outside the realm of mother/littermates. Whenever we breed which is seldom it is for us so we put a huge emphasis on the socialiation because we like our hounds to be strong, healthy both physically and mentally and handle well in the woods on top of their abilities to perform.

It is all a matter of necessity, if for whatever reason the mother can't or won't raise her pups to normal weaning age, or the pups cannot be kept together to the normal age of separation, then humans have to intervene if the pup is to survive. And yes, they will and usually do survive, they may and often do turn out fine. But anyone with half a brain in their head wants their puppy to get off to the best start possible and taking one out of the litter at 4 weeks is not the best start. That is a flat out fact and citing all the exceptions that made it don't change that fact.

EXACTLY THE REASON NOT TO REMOVE FROM MOTHER AND LITTERMATES BEFORE 7 WEEKS MINIMUM !!!!

ur right, we should not DEPEND on the breeder to socialize the pups but isnt that part of a good breeding program? breeders should be the foundation start of the pups along with the mother. if the breeder becomes known for handing out young pups, regardless of reason, they may not have a market for them any longer. if a "breeder" does not have the time, space, commitment for a litter (big or small) then the breeding should not take place. jmo

also, in this case, if you have to get the pup, I would quarantine it for several weeks away from any other dogs just in case. and re worm it and everyone else too.

Good point. Parvo vacs are not started until they are six weeks old so the immune system is still premature. Good luck with your pup.

I AGREE. NO IT'S NOT NORMAL, BUT SOMETIMES IN LIFE NOT NORMAL THINGS HAPPEN AND WE HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS.

SHES THE PUP I WAS TALKING ABOUT.

IT WAS IN THESE PUPS BEST INTEREST TO GET THEM EARLY BECAUSE THE MAMA WAS SNAPPING THEM AND MARKED ONE PUP. SHE WAS JUST TO ROUGH WITH HER WEANING.

ALL THE PUPPIES WERE FAT AS MUD AND AS OUTGOING AS COULD BE.
