Hunting in the heat?

How are you all finding safe hunting time in this midwest heat (something like 20 straight days in the mid to upper 90's)?
We are getting up at 3a and hunting a couple hours before work...the wife thinks I'm up to something!

Hunting In The Heat?

I've been shutdown for about 2 1/2 weeks or so.And its worse now than it was when I quit.I think it was 97 degrees at 7:00 pm yesterday evening when I went out to feed and water the hounds. The weather man called it "air you can wear".Yall stay safe.

Dog killing heat. Especially tree dogs. I will settle for internet coonhunting for right now. Live to hunt another day

no coon

is worth chasin around in this heat.... dogs can be layed up and still be just fine when weather becomes more reasonable to run in. If they are in need of constant running to remember what their job is.. your dog isn't very smart... give yourself, the dog and ole ring a break !!! lol...

Laid it down

I have hung up my hat till it cools off some. I hunted up until last week and got too hot in the woods one night. I walked to the truck dizzy and know the dog was too hot also. He was tree 35 minutes before we got there. Temps in the shade have been 105 to 110 this week. That's not counting open sun and humidity. I was born and raised in the south so heat is something you adjust too. This heat doesn't let you body adjust. We have no break in sight either. Best thing to do is stay home and get some ac poison.

ive been going about midnight, or 0100 hunting on big swimming water, and only making a drop or 2. Ive only been hunting about 3 nights a week, mainly cause im trying to train a young dog, and given them a night off.

Heat

I have tried to go early morning and right at dark and it is still hot. I usually go and tree 1 and call it quits. I carry fresh cold water for the dogs and i am sure it helps some. I don't know how they can have these hunts lately. I went to a hunt last Friday and it was hot, especially for a two hour hunt. I guess my dog was a little better conditioned for it since I won. I get to missing it too much if I stay at the house for too long. Not that my dogs needs hunted I think I do....

I doubt we have the same levels of high temps that you guys are talking about but even up here it has been HOT! We hunt right through it but that is because we have specific reasons and goals in mind. No way I'd be hunting every night in this heat if I was just hunting for fun because it is not fun.
As for the dogs, lotsa water between drops. no corn in the diet, keeping them in hunting condition, they take the heat just fine all night.

I don't know how hot it was when I turned loose last night but it was 94 at midnight when I quite. I hunted 7 nights strait last week trying to keep my dog in shape. Whenever I cant hunt her I run her for 4 miles on the four wheeler around the orchard in the evenings. She runs for 2 miles at 25 miles an hour and 2 miles at 20 miles an hour. I've never seen anything like it. She has a lot of energy. If I go any slower she will be pulling on the lead walking on her back legs so I just let her go. She seems to be holding up fine. I on the other hand am not doing so good.

heat

Im hunting 3 nights a week. Its sure enough hot. I hunt around plenty of water. and dont let them tree long. shine a min and get them cooled off. I have a young pup that is rocking and a lay off is not what he needs. make a tree or two and get back to the ac. stay safe and try to say cool.

I couldn't of picked a better summer to get my old body parts repaired ( back and knee)should be through with theropy by the end of August by then farmers will be cutting silage. and the nights will be getting cooler and longer! Their has been alot of old and young dogs succumb to the midwest heat this year.

We've been hunting 4-5 nights a week. Usually only 1-2 drops a night depending on the weather. Dogs are holding up pretty good, we just hunt as close to water as possible.

When I went out this morning at 4:00 it was 80degrees not a leaf sturring, had as much fun as if I was playing in a FIRE ANT hill.
A friend of mine in Fl who hunts a few dogs for me called and said a GATOR grabed one of his dogs last night but did not kill her cut her up real bad though and he said he heard a hunter in Braimbridge Ga got his MOJO female killed bye a Gator last night.
Shoot I am so hard headed go go in the morning, got nothing lse to do .

I've slowed waaaay down. This ain't fun. Probably would not even go this week if we didn't have a hunt Thur and Sat nights. This is ridiculous. I heard on the radio. We have had 58 days over 90 already and will have that many more. Coons ain't moving good around here either.

Dont mean to bump you fellas thread, but I was curious if you carry only water for your dogs? My son has a lab he duck hunts and was out throwing a ball for him a couple weeks ago, and the dog over heated. Kidneys almost shut down.

Long story short, vet told my boy to give him gatoraid. Just wondered if you guys had heard that.

Be safe! Don't let them gators get ya Mr H L!!!

....I was still hunting 3-5 nights a week till a week ago.......it was 86 degrees at 4am here................our coons are moving EARLY.............guess it's because it gets hot as hades in those den trees in this kind of weather.............

i'm still hunting about like always maybe not as long each night. of course my plotts are not what you'd call high intensity hunters either. my stephens curs hunts like there's no tomorrow and the heat doesn't bother her. i see her at high noon laying in the sun and she's black. my kemmer pup got into a little trouble the other night though. all five of my dogs jumped a deer and the race was on. afterwards i had to go in to get the pup. she walked out but she was trembling. that's it for her for a while. the others are used to the heat since i've been roading them all along. i take a sprayer, the pump up kind, and spray my dogs all over evertime they come in to drink. they are learing to like it and it really helps to cool them down.

Been hunting 3 to 4 nights a week the last couple weeks but have been but hunting different dogs. Not hunting the same dog more than 2 nights in a row. Also hunting the young dogs a lot by themselves. We have had record rainfall the last 2 months so the creeks still have plenty water for the dogs to climb in and cool off.

Seen on the weather channel yesterday that a Canadian air mass is supposed to be dropping south by early next week and our temps should be back to normal. Low 80's of the day and mid 60's of the night with low humidity. Cant hardly wait.
