Waiting till they are old to breed the first time, can be a challenge as have had one that killed the pups ... guess she thought them rats ! Tried again and did raise a litter from her, but it required a lot of time and a muzzle for 10 days. Kept pups in house and brought her in to them every few hours around the clock ..... she didn't think it was wise to wean them, for months ! I had her line for generations, and the females didn't swell hardly any at all, they also would bleed for over 12 days, if waited till till it stopped you wouldn't get pups. Was told to breed between 10th and 11 day from first drop ...... it worked. It helps to check back on the breeder of her, or her mothers line they might tell you a lot that helps, and remember the pups may follow suit ! Good Luck, with your litter !

thx bud
she has had pups before, but the male was just left in the pen with her. this is not the case now. I hope I haven't waited too late, but the vet says she is ready. I looked under the microscope with the vet and saw the cells with a dark spot in the middle and the cell was oddly shaped. Looked it up on the internet and all looks right cell wise, just never seen one not seemingly swell much at all. we will c. Gonna just give it a shot and see. Wanted to drive to Indiana and breed to a male up there, but just could not take the chance and spend that kind of money on trip and stud fee and not get pups at all because of not knowing what to do. Its a real pickle. Good to know that not much swelling is a possibility.

your best bet on a female that dont swell is to have her AI.
