getting a hound over being scared of a coon?
i have a 1 and a half year old walker male that has never been trained.. i showed him a whole dead coon and he wanted nothing to do with it.. i then showed him just a coon tail and he sniffed it and then bit it a few times.. then i showed him a caged coon and he is just so scared of it.. he will not bark at a dead coon, or just a coon tail. how can i get my hound to bark at a coon and to not be scared of coon??? i even shot a coon out to him and all he does is run away from the coon how can i get him to not be scared of coon and to run and tree and just be coon crazy????
Some never make it.
I would try to release it in front of the dog. 100 yards open field going into a tree line. Wait 2-5 let the hound go. In the daylight. So it can see it run.
If it will trail it, try it in the dark. Wait 10-15min, then let the dog go.
How many times have you had this dog in the woods? Has it been beat by a coon?

it has been in the woods atleast 50 to 100 times.. he has a good nose on him but he wont bark nor he does he have any thing to do with a whole coon.. just a tail.. i am trying what wick said which is puttin a live caged coon by the feed and water pan this is the 1st day doin that.. he does smell just the dead coon tail and he will bite it.. he has very good blodlines i just dont know how to get him out of being timid...he has not been beat by a coon.. he will fight a cat i do know that only if he is attacked tho...
costs the same to feed a good one
been in the woods 50 to 100 times, that is more than a lot of hounds this age. will fight a cat if attacked? what kind of cats have you got around your house? seriously, you need to get rid of this hound or just let it be a pet. I have had 8 and 9 month old pups that did a lot more than this one did and never turned out to be what I called a good hound.
you really need to start with another prospect and put it in the woods 100 times between 6 and 12 months old. that is more than every other day. it should show you something during that time.
I have one thats been treeing coons for 3 yrs now and still to this day is scared to death of one.
Try letting a coon go where the dog can see it go.
