Bear Up

Telephoned a buddy today and we loaded seven of my hounds and went for a short run on the mountain. It was around 9:00 AM by the time we reached the mountain and collared up those hounds, but as luck would have it they struck a nice bear on the wind. WE couldn't find a track on the road so I shipped my ten and twelve year old redbones and they were soon to the track and giving voice, so down went Goldie and Kody. Those two hit and struck as well and so I shipped Griz, Rui Li and Maverick to put the heat on it. Couple miles later and the deal was done.........

Looks like they put the pressure on him, nice looking brown bear, by the looks of the pic I would say 125 to 150 pounder, do the brown bears run like the black ones? The ones here about that size can move and can be right wild, jumping around in the tree and such, but he looks pretty dang content pearing down on that pack.....musta been pulling hair.

This bear appeared to be an adult sow, whatever they weigh around here probably 175 to 200 pounds. If the black ones run any different than the brown, chocolate or blonde bears I never made note of it. In my experience, the four to seven year old boars run and fight the hardest. Get a male in his prime (four to eight years) and he can put down some tracks if he wants before peeling bark and heading up. It's been years since I walked into a bayup unless they were in a hole..........

keep'em treed,
ike

thats a nice choclate , did i understand u rite when u said its been yrs since u walked into a bayed up bear? Are u sayin all ur bears will climb?

Posted by RunninBear(Ike) on 07-27-2011 01:33 PM:

That was probably a bad choice of words, or maybe something that I should have left unsaid. I suppose I just haven't ran into a rough bear in recent years? Who knows? But since I already said it I'll say it again, I have not walked into a bayup in years.........

I ran down a rough boar out in the Book Cliffs for a client about six years ago, which was the second bear we had treed that day. We started him around 10:00 or 11:00 AM and the dogs started quieting him around 5:00 PM after a terrible rainstorm. We walked into that bayup and could not get a shot at him with the muzzleloader my hunter had, that's when the rainstorm hit and we headed to the truck.

After the storm the bear came along a sidehill about a hundred and fifty yards with only two dogs left barking at his tail only feet behind him. I grabbed my .300 Weatherby out of the back seat and told the hunter to shot him but he was afraid of hitting one of the two trailing dogs--they were broadside, so I called those two dogs in.

I had twelve dogs in camp and the next morning I loaded all twelve, stuck them on that same red boar and the fight was gone as he plopped into a tree. That was the last bayup I remember..........

The Book Cliffs is a place where some of these guys have dumped twenty or thirty dogs on a single bear, so those bears learn to run and fight hard. This bear had run off another pack about a week before I was out there in short order, according to hearsay. A good pack of bear dogs either learns to stick and move on those bears, or follow the quitters out when things get rough........

Not at all if i treed every bear my hounds caught id tell every body lol i would really like to seen the dif in the places we hunt. i know around here we kill just as many on the ground as in trees an it is rare an i mean rare that u tree a big one ( over 300lbs ) unless its at nite. Last yr i myself walked into atleast probally 6 or 7 bays. My dogs arent the best but will NOT quit a bear no matter how rough he gets an ull not call them off one either ull have to go in an catch em. but now on the coast its nothing for them guys to tree 500 an 600lbs bears, it seems like around here though if they are ran allot they either tree really quick or not at all. ive seen first hand bears single dogs out an thats the worst kind to get on. i know around here if one descides hes not gonna climb hes not gonna i may not make him sling bark but he will have to back up an face um.

Seen that kind as well, lock on one dog and give chase for thirty or forty yards, than back up and single out another.....a mean bear for sure.......

It was fun to have you along Josh, and if you ever get out this way again give me a shout. That country Matt and I took you in was all snowed in this spring and I didn't get over there, had to go other places I guess, but those old red dogs find a track if one has crossed and so it's all good.........

Keep'em treed!
Dennis

Thanks on the dogs but it still hurts that a guy can grab your dogs, take the collars off and throw them in a pond, take those hounds home for ten days and them give them back when the heat is about to come down on him. The deputy sheriff told me he left notes on their house and the father or son never contacted him, so he sat up the lane and watched the house with field glasses, then jumped on the adult son when he came out into the yard. He told me that young man told him I was lucky that I got my hounds back...........and it still makes me mad enough to fight!

Keep'em treed,
ike
