Scared Of Coon ???

I HAVE A YOUNG DOG THAT IS SCARED OF A COON,WHAT DO U THINK I SHOULD DO ABOUT THIS,IS SHE TOO YOUNG SHE IS 9 MONTHS OLD NOW.KEEP HUNTING HER? OR GIVE HER A BULLIT.

if your talking about a caged coon. try taking the coon to the dog instead of taking the dog to the coon. dogs have a tendacy to be a little braver on there home turf!! just a thought.

Some also mature slower than others. Had one bred the best and was terrified of coon, so I got rid of her only to find out later that she was really turning it on.

For my four years of hunting experience with every pup I showed a coon some would not bark at it acted scared but they were tearing up the woods. I got a dog that won't bark at a caged coon but she's a nice dog

Release one in front of her and let her see it run from her. Let her watch another dog fight one and join in if she wants. I would mess with her a while. Like the othe one said "it makes a big differance between takeing her to the coon or the coon comeing to her yard and being drug or in a roll cage. I would rather it be drug in a bag so the dog can bite the bag.

Wick said he put the dogs water and feed beside the cage where the coon could reach out and eat. He said that didn't last but a few days. He came home to find a mangled cage and dead coon.

One of the best dogs I've ever had was scared of a coon. He treed them but he made it plain that Iwas supposed to kill them. I've had several that were good dogs but were scared of a coon in a cage but not one from a tree.

What's she doing about running & treeing ? Young enough to have some time there to but if you're saying she just won't fight a coon but is progressing everywhere else I wouldn't even worry about it. They show it to me I can handle it from there.

Cages are strange. I had a coon in a 4' x4' x4' cage and an 8 month old pup off The original Hickory Nut Harry. So this was awhile ago. I'd turn him out and he would bay while I was feeding up. After a few days he got where he would run up to the cage and bark a time or two and go check out the rest of the yard. This got me aggravated so I put the pup in the cage. The pup just put his head in the corner and let the coon eat his rear end up. Well that got me even more aggravated so I took the pup out and went to work on him myself. Directly, like they say, I had beat the collar off him. He stayed gone for 4 days. I should have ruined him looking back but I have never had a dog that hated a coon worse than him to this day.

Steve I have a female that will try and get behind me when I show her a caged coon. Turn it loose in front of her and look out. Her brother was the same way. They are 11 months now.

I showed my best dog a caged coon one time just to see what she'd do. She DOVE into her house.

i have had her out maby 6 times and shown her maby 3 coons,she hasn't started hunting yet but act like she wants to go then comes back in,she is not sure about the coon seems to be scared of it.i believe she need more time to mature i may lay her up for awhile.

I have had several that wouldn t give a caged coon a second glance,but would be under one every time you cut him! I dont let dogs fight coons ,young or old.If I wanted a fightin dog I would go into the pit bull business!Killhim dead or dont shoot.

Dogs fighting the coon and this whole caged coon is so overrated. If the dog does fight the coon etc many are set back because we burn them out on pulling the coon up a tree watching them tree and bragging to our buddies. Then when we go to the woods you have a difficult time duplicating that excitement of sight treeing.

You must make the whole thing a game. If that pup is bred right and you have patience it will probably make a dog. Just put her in the woods in situations that she can succeed. Let the coon go and good hot tracks will excite her after awhile.

I had a GRNITECH.that was afraid of a coon.Don't worry about it,you want her to track and tree,so what if she can't fight a coon
Don't rush her.

Your expecting too much from a 9 month old PUP. Give her some time, some real fine hounds don't get interested till their a little older. If you push it too hard on the coon you may ruin a good prospect. Just my opinion.

i've seen pups go crazy after a cage coon at a young age and never do nothing in the woods.i had a bluetick that was a great hound and wouldn't bark at a cage coon!i would lay her up for a few months.

You might be a bit concerned if it was a "26 month old pup", but a 9 month old, give her time! Just remember, patience is a virtue.

dont even work it on a cage just take it to the woods and let it be a puppy. Let it explore, follow, or eat grass what ever the case maybe at the time. The best thing we can ever do is just get 'em in the woods and let them do what they do.
