They aren't winners. Winning infers you had competition. They simply pass or fail.

Then why is it so many dogs fall in the catagory of "win in competition , but cannot get the job done on there own" ? ?? This catagory is growing very rapidly.

hunt test winners
I'm with you Blue ridge 1, it not always about '' THE COMPETITION'' there are alot of good dogs out there that never see a hunt. I imagine there are also dogs out there that have won in competition who could not pass a hunt test.
HTX titled dogs impress me more than those nitech or grnitech. dogs cant be called off other dogs, pencil wiped me too babbling idiots. i have witnessed several of these big titled all grand stud dogs are titled off striking and treeing off other hounds not mentioning any NAMES...........
I think UKC should give out "participation" trophys too....

The first post ask about giving them credit as winners. All I said is winning infers some sort of competition. Hunt test are not a competition.
Every month Kellam writes his column "HTX=COON DOG". In months past he has listed dogs that passed, listed all the dogs with multiple degrees and in this months edition he invites you to send a photo and a short story on your HTX dog for publication. That is something right there.
Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers too bad Jim. They say when your flying over the target you start getting the surface to air defense fire.

I like the hunt test format. I wish there was a way to implement it into the nite hunt format. Bottom line is that there are a lot of dogs that can't tree their own coon consistantly and are titled in UKC. The ukc rules are tailor made for a me too dog. Until UKC adds a declining tree rule and others that penalize a dog that gets open quick and piles on behind the dog doing the work we are just going to have to deal with it. Even though me-too dogs do win more than they should I am still a firm believer that if you are packing a coondog you will still win against the me-too dogs. Is the casts that the me-too dogs or a dog that follows you around and the cast walks it across coon and wins that get under my skin. I would rather squeek out a cast win or lose one from time to time than pack a dog to a hunt that's like that though.
I think UKC should make or give something to clubs ( insentives )to have so many hunt tests a year. Like a poster above said he has no hunt tests around him, and I'm not finding any in my state.. I would be at a hunt test every weekend if any was around here close. I live 4-miles from our UKC club, and I can't get them to hold any.. I personally don't care nothing about the Nite hunts....

I disagree with the HTX title meaning that you have a coondog though.... LOTS of dogs can tree a coon by themselves... and its true that you are the one feeding it but an HTX title carries very little weight. The measure of a dog today is how it does with competition. It is a personal choice, but whether you like the nite hunts or not they are an essential part of bettering the breeds. VERY VERY few people are going to breed to a dog just because it can tree a coon by itself. Throw it in with 3 other dogs and have it win on a regular basis and its an all together different story.

There's alot of things a person can pick through on Comp. hunts and HTX hunts, but saying a dog can tree a coon by its self is not doing much is B.S. If I was selling a dog to you and tell you he can sure run with the other dogs and tree coons, but he can't by himself he just stands in the road would you buy it ? And your last comment throw it in with three other dogs and see what it can do ? 1st off... If the dog aint no good, a slick handler can still walk away making the dog look good... 2nd. More than likely if the dog will go tree a coon by its self, it will probably go its own way and tree its own coon. And THEN here comes all the me too dogs.. LOL... This is just tthe way I think.. Nothing against Comp. hunters getting out and enjoying a night in the woods with each other.. Good luck in your night hunts..
IF YOU ARE PACKING A REAL COON DOG EVERYONE WILL KNOW IT. IT WILL NOT MATTER IF IT IS A HUNT OR A TEST OR EVEN A PLEASURE HUNT.
