Rare Breed Chickens

This is completely off topic, but I wanted to show off my chicks. I have a flock of some rare and unusual breeds of chickens. I love my chickens! They are my stress relief! I love just watching them scratch around the yard. I have Large Fowl Partridge Cochins and Spangled Russian Orloffs. Bantam BB Red Old English Games and Splash Cochins. Bantams are miniature chickens. Because modern farmers use specialized breeds of livestock many of the breeds used by our ancestors are on the verge of extinction! I currently have Spangled Russian Orloff chicks. Orloffs are critically endangered. There are only 500 breeding flocks left in existence.

Here's some pics of my chicks. The Orloffs all have white mixed "spangled" feathers. The other chicks are feather footed Partridge Cochins and BB Red Old English Bantams.

I also have some mixed breed chicks that I let free range around our farm. Here's some pics of them.
Elvis, Black Cochin

Ginger- Gold Phoenix on her nest hidden under our grape vines. Her babies are hatching right now!

You have some beautiful chickens, don't blame You for being proud of them.I used to raise Speckeled Sussox (big chickens) and Spangled Old English Game Bantams. So Your Russian chickens really fascinate Me because obviously I love that color.I haven't heard of the Russians But I like them a lot. Good luck with them. CYa

I may have to get back into keeping some chickens again. I sure miss the color and motion they add to a country place not to mention the eggs and meat. Thanks for posting your pics, they sure look like they are in high clover.

NICE!

Amy, Elvis looks AWESOME! They all look so happy.... We only have 1 rooster(not even sure WHAT he is! LOL) and 3 hens left.... I will miss them tons once they're gone but... too hard to keep em here now... AND new neighbors moving in make the roosters less welcome...and THEY are the ONLY reason I liked keeping chickens... LOVE to see your pix as always!
Hope all is AWESOME with you and Lance and ALL the critters!

Stay COOL as you can, Heather and Bob

Ideal hatchery in Texas has a lot of rare and unusual breeds. They do carry Spangled Russian Orloffs. Another hatchery is Welp. There are many hatcheries. Just get online and look at the wonderful breeds. I would recommend you check out backyardchickens.com. The site has a lot of great breed info.

If you like/want games consider Old English Game Bantams. All the beauty and personality of the large fowl in a miniature package.

Rick,I've had My share of those Guys too!!!! I dearly loved the "SPORT OF KINGS". My best were Mingus Doms which I kept pure. I never used the pure stuff though but the Dom crosses were wicked. Does that stock of Doms still exist ?? I never would have quit, but things got unpleasant so I dropped out about 30 yrs ago. I still miss them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CYa

Games make great brood hens. They will fiercely protect their babies. I had two hatch out this week. My black mama has 14 and Ginger my Gold Phoenix has 12. So, lots of fuzzy butts running around the yard. Emmett my Pomeranian thought it would be fun to sniff one of my babies, and black mama ran him all around the house. She was at death-con 6!!!! LOL. He now has a new respect for little biddies.

good looking birds, y'all. i have some rare ones, too. golden laced polish, white crested black polish, partridge cochin and dark cornish mixed in with my flock of new hamp reds, rhode island reds, production reds, silver laced wyandottes, barred rocks, and black sex link. keep the rare breeds going. the dark cornish are broody, can rustle for themselves and raise on their own, and when crossed with a rock make a fine, plump eating bird(cornish cross).

We've got some here in Alabama.Best LK cocks to ever grace a "show".If a cock leaves the ground with 1 he'll be dead when he hits the ground.

Redquill stag

Pumpkin Hulsey trio.

Radio cock crossed over the dom hens make knife cocks that can't be touched. We call'm the SOB's

You guys have very Beautiful birds! The heat is rough on the chicks, just had one of my guinea keets drown in the water tub. I turned them out of the coop to eat bugs. I have all different sized waterers never guessed he would go swimming in the big tub!
