This is probably a dumb question but...

Anybody ever trained a pup that turned out to be a good coondog without a pup trainer or older dog? If so how did you do it?

Im just wondering because I've heard of it being done but never have totally understood how they did it. Sorry if this is a dumb question, Im just curious. I have'nt had a lot of experience in the actual training end of hunting.

ive known a few people who've done it.i dont see how thats a stupid question lol.well anyways..one of them hounds turned out to be the best dog that my buddy ever owned.and has yet to still have one as good as that old female he had.just expose it to some coon and do some cut looses.then eventually start hunting it on its own.if there breed with it,they'll go.goodluck

very rarely do i ever put a pup with a "pup trainer". good yard work, and long walks in the woods. I put out feeders for young dogs and let the natural instinct take over. lot of bad habits are learned from older dogs. rather work them alone and then when they tree a few on their own i put a more experienced dog with them. Yard work, teach them good manner, good tracks, and lots of time. it does work.

You know it really takes a few Very Easy Coon that they find on their own.. I had a 8 month old pup that I have Squirrel Hunt with since he was 12 weeks old so he knew what game was and how to tree it .. Our coon Populations were way down due to Distemper so it was very tough finding him a easy trail .. One night we lucked out Big time !! He stumbled across a coon with a broke front leg that he ran prob. close enought to see it then it treed but could'nt climb up to far.. Well the coon fell out and he killed it .. From that night on he was a real coonhound he knew what the game was all about ..

When we would catch a Coon we Never had anyluck with a Clean turn out and chase, something allways went astray .. Just quit Training on turn-outs ...

We started using Coon Egg Traps tied off on about 8'-10' of light rope or wire.. Then let pups find them on their own and Found out this to really Blow a pups Mind to find a coon on the ground or alittle ways up a tree..

Thanks guys! Yall are giving me a little more hope lol I dont currently have an older dog(last one didnt work out so her old owners bought her back). I found a pup bred like I want and as soon as it's weaned Im going to get him. This is probably what Im going to have to do with it, dont have a lot of coon hunting friends in my area. I cant wait until I get him home so I can start messing with him.

if a pup has the heart and brains you dont need a pup trainer just lots of paients and time jmo

i dont use pup trainers i use alot of coon ,coon scents , pelts etc i make them intersted in it and praise the crap out of them i dont show em a live coon till bout 7 or 8 months old ive had great succces with this hope it helps.....when they are real small like 2 3 months i use a hot dog to work on thier trailing feed em a piece then drag it a little farther each time he or she will find it i even drag em up a tree its funny to watch lil pups get on a tree

Sarah, The best dog I ever owned was not hunted with anything else from the time he was 7 months old 'til he was almost two years old.
Started him on a 'drag coon' I found killed on the road. From there I walked him through the woods at night. Over a period of 3 weeks, I shot 3 or 4 out to him. Usually trying to just wound them, so he could have a short race. By that time, he was starting to trail and tree on his own. From then on, he just kept getting beeter and better.
He was a natural coondog and the best I ever owned, mabe one of the best I ever hunted with. He died at 12 years old. I wish I had another one like him.

dumb question

this is not a dumb question. There is no such thing as a dumb question when one is trying to raise their intelligence level. There are, however, a lot of dumb answers. I have trained bird dogs, retrievers, squirrel dogs, cow dogs, and coon dogs without a pup trainer and had good to great success. The pup trainer gives you a better idea what the pup is fooling with, if the pup trainer is broke and a dependable one. That is the biggest advantage in having a pup trainer in my opinion. Do your homework, locate areas where you desired game frequents on a regular basis, put out an attractant of some type, and spend as much time with you pup as you can. Leading, loaded, teaching it to come to you on command, etc. This will pay big dividends on you dogs future and yours. If you release your pup in places where the game you want it run/tree this will speed up the "hunt process" natural instincts will take over and nature will take its course. If the ability is in it the pup will do fine. Not all horses can win the Kentucky Derby but they can all run.

I've trained several without any help and they invariably make a better quality dog, but I have a good coon population where I live. Still takes a lot of boot leather though.

Yes it can be done. I did it when I could do no better. Do it once and do it right because alot of folks are right on here. You don't want to train a pup with an imbacile. That being said, do it right with the first dog and you can have it teach a pup faster and better and easier so much, you will never go back to the bootleather method.

Thank you guys so much! I really appareciate the help. I feel so much better knowing this can be done. Im right on the river so there are a lot of coons down here.

As far as setting out feeders though how do you make yours and what do you use in them? I've always heard put corn and water, but Ive also heard if the corn gets moldy it can hurt their immune systems and make the coons start dying out?

i use sour corn (corn in water) with tire on rim feeders. they don't give the corn time to go bad lol. i like these feeders cause the dogs can pick up a track on the ground. hanging feeders tend to cause pups to tree on or at the feeder.

I've never started one with a pup trainer. I don't like dogs to pick up bad habits. I've seen a lot of pups that learn to listen for a dog to open and then go see what its doing. That often becomes a habit. Go to a few hunts and watch some of the dogs. You will see ALOT that hunt this way. A me too dog is no good.

Funny how everyone talks about instincts with pups and no one wants a pup trainer. I've found that pups left to their own desires and instincts pick up worse habits than one hunted with other dogs. I'm careful about turning loose with strange dogs but my own all hunt together. Most pups are going to chase whatever they desire unless trained otherwise. They generally don't mess around with trash as much if they are ran with BROKE dogs. I've had pups start to run deer or elk and turn around and go back to the other dogs when they realize the other dogs aren't going. Of course with big game hunting I don't want independant dogs like alot of you guys do. I want a good PACK of dogs. If a dog breaks from the pack, he better have his own critter, everytime. If you get the RIGHT pup trainer it will do nothing but good for your pup. Alot of the "pup trainers" for sale on the internet are really culls and should be treated as such.
