WYOMING MULE DEER I drew a once in a lifetime tag

I have been applying for a once in a life time mule deer tag in wyoming, they only issue 100 a year it is a late season migration and rut combined in the wind river range just outside dubois wyoming, unit 128/129

Anyone have any advice please respond, they kill 180 to 240 inch mullies that are migrateing out of yellowstone they come to this protected winter range and the rut is on

season is november 1st through the 20th.

Cant believe it been applying for 6 years, there are a lot of locals that have never drawn it cant wait.

make sure that you are in the best shape you can be in.... it will help your odds of success a lot.... high elevation could be lots of snow... look at lots of pictures and mounts so when you see a monster you know it is truly a monster. I grew up not to far from where you have your tag for and there is some true monsters there. dont shoot the first one you see look at lots and lots of bucks before you shoot one.

GARY WHERE I WILL BE IS LOW ELEVATION

All the way down on the wind river, when I was out there in 2008 I talk to a lot of folk and the way I understand down at those elevations they average a 3 to 5 inch annual snow fall.

The game should be concentrated in those river bottoms and the rolling hills that connect.

Do you live out there now ?

No I live about 300+ miles from there I know where your talking I missed the part about late season. this last year we got a ton of snow over a 180" I dont know what they got but I know most places where way up. so I am sure the deer where down low. might be the same this year but they might not get any snow this year. I am not sure exatley how big your unit is but I would study topo maps and areal photos have area's picked out for back up spots. strong bino's and scopes help a lot.... Is this a DIY hunt? I wish you luck and hope you see some monsters there there you just have to find them.

Yes IT is a DIY

I will leave here and head out there around 25 of october season opens nov 1st and runs til nov 20 I am prepared to stay for the long haul if neccesary, not sure about total land size I have maps on the way from blm i know it covers two counties. It starts at boise goes north west toward yellowstone and takes in table mountain, then goes south and east and joins the wind river indian reservation, I will know more about total acreage when I get my maps

don't know bout' the mule deer but I got to bow hunt elk north of Dubois at Double Cabins 10 years ago. Best there could be, we were in elk every day and had them screaming all night all around camp. More beautiful than yellowstone. Just gotta watch out for the grizzlies. It's thick with them. Good luck, Wyoming is my kinda place. Lucky stiff. lol

Was just out there last week. Was still a ton of snow in the high country. They must have had a heck of a winter.

We had a guide. This was the 2nd time I was there. Enjoyed myself both times. Hopefully I'll be back someday. This trip was all about spending time with my Dad. He shot a pretty nice one too..... Wouldn't trade watching Dad shooting his buck for anything! The trip will be what you make it....MAKE IT THAT ONCE IN A LIFETIME HUNT! Take lots of pictures. We'll enjoy seeing them..............Jon
