Brucellosis Test

What is the average cost of one and how long does it take to get the results?

Posted by riproarinkennel on 06-27-2011 02:54 AM:

I JUST PAID $35.7O AND GOT THE RESULTS IN LESS THAN 15 MINUTES.

I spent last Friday morning calling a bunch of vets in my area of Iowa trying to find someone who does an in-house brucella test. I didn't find a single one who does, I got prices from $45-$75 (to send them out to a lab), and I even got several receptionists who had no clue what I was asking for and had to put me on hold to go ask.
I ended up driving to Iowa State Univ and paid 16.50 for the office call, 48.00 for a therio exam (but they said no exam was done -- it was just another charge for walking thru the door), 16.00 for the test, and 10.50 for a submission fee (what the heck is that?!), but they wouldn't run the test if all I brought them was the blood. But the results were back within an hour!
And I was told veterinary care was a lot cheaper in the midwest than in CA!!?? I don't think so!! In CA I would have walked into my vet, paid less than $40 total, and had the results within 15 minutes. Gawddddd I miss my old vet!!!!

I MUST ADMIT ...

I HAD ABOUT THE SAME EXPERIENCE HERE IN S.C.
EVEN WITH A VET I HAD USED BEFORE FOR IN HOUSE RESULTS.
LARRY STRINGER HOOKED ME UP WITH HIS VET IN "SOMEWHERE", TENN.
IT'S A SIMPLE TEST FOR THOSE WHO ARE EQUIPED WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS.

And then technology occured and a snap test was developed for it. Ta da!! Now it's as simple as testing for heartworms.
Problem is that if a vet clinic doesn't do very many brucellosis tests, they lose money buying the whole box of tests which will expire before they can use them all. That's why vets who don't do much work with breeders will send the blood out to their lab. And that's why if you're interested in the "technicalities" of breeding dogs, it's good to know which vet(s) our local "AKC breeders" in your area religiously use.
I'm pulling my hair out because I've been asking around for the past year and I get "ABC vet is good for emergency sections, DEF vet shows dogs and is breeder-friendly but doesn't have an xray machine (are you kidding!!!), but HIJ vet is good for OFA's but if you want no sedation then you want to go to KLM vet, but if you want chilled or frozen AIs you need to go to NOP vet.
As my good ol horse and cow vet in California liked to say, "What's up with these new vets who only want to specialize in certain things and not do it all!"
Having a vet tech degree myself, I understand the viewpoint of those new vets, but it sure is frustrating when all you want is a good vet who knows and appreciates the specifics of breeding dogs!

I haven't even bred my dog yet, but I already booked her pregnancy ultrasound at Iowa State.....and I didn't even want to know what that's going to cost! I'll just show up, write the check, smile at the receptionist, and hope to god I won't be coming back for a c-section.

There is one in Sumter that is about $40 and will have the results within 20 minutes. I use one in Santee, it costs $50 and they will call me with the results before I get home. If I need the paper work I normally pick it up the next day.
