free casting
how does one train a hound to free cast? i used to walk hunt them but of course couldn't cover enough area to hunt effectively. so i went to road hunting them. the problem is when i want to free cast them, say in a comp. hunt, they won't go. can this be fixed. my older plott is 2 and the younger one is one yr old.

I'll free cast the dog and sit down and wait. Usually they get bored and venture off. I also carry a pocket full of rocks that I use as a training aid if they don't want to leave. lol

A lot of times the amount of hunt a dog has is predetermined. But I have made a couple of dogs hunt wider by turning them loose right in a woods and just sitting and letting them venture out. A couple of weeks of this and then I start turning them farther and farther from the woods. One hound I did this too ended up being one of the hardest hunting dogs Ive ever followed. It takes time so dont think it will happen quick and it can be frustrating. But if the desire is there it will happen eventually.
You can take a dog that will go hunting and turn them both loose. If the one don't go put it back in the dog box and do this at each drop. Soon it will learn to get away and go hunting rather than just set in the dog box all night. Road hunting will make some dogs not want to get out and go hunting. They tend to like to stay close to you and the truck or run down the road like idiots cause that is what they know to do.
If you keep putting them back in the box they usually get sick of missing out on the "Fun" the other dogs are having and will pack up with them and go.
thanks for the all the replys. all of them make sense and i'm going to start trying them.

Life is to short. I have tried the (wait em out routine) a couple times and slept on the tailgate while the dog slept under the truck. If they lack the drive to go hunting its time to start over.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but thats my opinion.

Something I've learned. . . You can make a dog disappear but you can't make one hunt.
You can beat or shock a dog out of an area to make one go deeper....but when half the time they are worrying on getting away from you instead of hunting...
As free casting.... jus hunt them alone a lot and do a lot of recasting is what I would do.....idk never had a problem ever having one not cast alone
