i am just really curious, i had a buddy of mine put a garmin on skeet and boy, i really became reliant on that garmin for that short time. i wanted to see where he was and i figured out I WASNT LISTENING TO HIM. so, i am a little leary about taking him out without one just because it is so convenient to look down and say, ok, there he is. but, on the other hand, i had alot more confidence in both of us when we didnt have one on. i am going back to the bare bones of everything. just seemed to have so many more surprises (some not so good), but i had alot of fun with just a flashlight and my dog. now it feels like i was really roughing it.

My reason is becouse dogs are expensive and training them cost more than they do. It is a safety thing. You loose one dog and you have lost a lot of money plus you let a dog get ran over that you liked. I would no more take a chance of getting a dog ran over than one os my kids. Why would anyone take the chance would be my question to you?

well, jmo, i have read time and time again where dogs still get run over with a garmin on. the only difference is when you see the blip on the screen stop moving and your heart sinks. i never saw where you could stop that with a garmin. again jmo. you dont have a garmin on your kids do you??? when you run a dog , no matter what breed, you always take the chance. darn, you dont even have to run them, just own them. again, jmo

Kelly, the new and the aw will wear off quicker than u think with the Garmin,I was really fasinated with mine as well as many other when we first bought them ,now they are seldom looked at unless no dogs are opening for a period of time.

If things were like the use to be where I didn't have to worry about roads and irrate land owners I'd have no problem with a flashlight a rifle and a good dog.But in this day and time it's all about keeping my dog safe.

it just got me thinking is all. i read a post where someone's garmin broke and now they are out of the woods til they get it fixed. no offense to anyone, i would much rather rely on my dog in the woods than that darn garmin. just having it on him that couple times had gotten me to rely on it instead of my dog. i am not a hypocrit, i will own one one day. but i just dont want to rely on it.
if you do, you will panic when it breaks. just the threads i have read in the past.

The Garmin is a must have to me. I'd never turn one loose without it period. Just last night we had to round them up as they were coming toward a highway. Had you rather have your hard work splattered in a rd or shot behind a house where they had no business being? Loose one in the ground and never hear from it again? I promise the Garmin has already saved thousands of hounds lives. The way I see it. If you dont do evey thing possible within your means to keep one safe. A person does not deserve a hound! Now about my bright light. Thats easy. Folks can talk about em all they want. If they dont think I can see more coon than they can a little flashlight. Thats crazy to not be able to see the difference in that. Now my shocker. Well I might track mine to the rd and here comes all kinds traffic. I zap em and holler and get em back. The shocker is another safety net for me. Trucks? lol..Dang I have 2 4x4s.. 2 dog boxes.. Heck a lot of folks have more than me.. In short though. Its all about the hound.

i totally understand that, i want to keep my dog safe also, but, all the garmin does is say, oh crap, your dog is a movin pretty far off. oh crap, crossed a property line, oh no and then panic ensues.
had this happen once. dog got lucky, not mine, he was in a major intersection and all that garmin told us was, you are in trouble, could be bad. when i couldnt hear skeet, i panicked and yelled (in a rain storm with high wind) i dont know how he heard me but he did and came back. but, on the same token, the garmin let me know where he was and how fast he was bookin. also, i know my dog wont cruise out 2 miles just for giggles. i can see where the tracking stuff would help with irate land owners though. have seen those threads also.
again, i am just wondering how much faith everyone has in their dogs ability and training.
and most of all, themselves.

okay, situation for you,
if you had the means to hunt your dog on 5000 acres with no roads anywhere close, could you put your garmin in the truck???
i again understand what you are saying. some situations are beyond our control anymore with all of the highways and lack of hunting areas.
dont worry, got a couple 4x4's too. my boy means the world to me. he is my light in the night, my sweet , sweet music to soothe me and get my heart pumping and my best friend. will a garmin save his life one day, maybe. will a garmin tell me when he loses his life, maybe.
this was just to see what people thought.

I only put my tracking collars on the dogs as a "last resort" thing.
I don't pull the tracker out unless I lose them and can't call them in. And that is VERY rare.
Folks got by for years without them. And we can get along without them now. If you can't , you're not much of a hunter.
There ain't no way I'd ever let that determine whether I went hunting or not.

Oh , and I fogot , I don't ever carry a compass coonhunting either.

My dad used to tease me about hunting with a " 10 cent light , a 2 dollar rifle , and a million dollar coondog" because I had a pretty good dog , a two-cell flashlight , and a single-shot 22. LOL

My garmin is on unless its a hunt. I dont care if its 100,000 ac. If we hunt together and you need a collar. I'll loan you one. Lots of hounds would still be alive if we had of had garmins sooner.

I'd prefer a garmin but I don't have one. I try to put trackers on and remember to take the magnets out but sometimes I forget . Sometimes a dog gets out of my rusty old pens and i hear him treed when I get back home and ends up all I got is my rifle that stayes in the truck and my keychain light. But I can find them with a bic lighter if I need to. A compass? A compass? I wouldn't trust one unless I had three all saying the same thing. Id rather trust my judgement and it is about a 50/50 so far. A coon in the moon light with the moon greater than 45 degree angle ain't got a chance in hell in an evergreen though if I decide I am going to get that coon I'll wait it out.
Garmins have not reached one half of their potential untill they are strapped on the coon, to heck with a dog, if a dog barks I know where a dog is, but a coon bees quiet mostly so there you go. Would you like to know where the coon is right now and look on the screen to see it past by where the dog struck half hour ago but it is going the opposite direction from where the dog is going ( called back tracking). If you ain't got a Garmin on the coons you will never ever know alot of stuff we sit on the tailgate and make up a bunch of bull about. But that's down the road I recon. The future of lying dogs is in peril.
By the way, I hunt on 12,000 acres , 2,000 marsh and you can't get lost cause i got enough night vision to see the hill edge or be swimmin one. The othe 10,000 acres pretty much has two rut tracks all over. Then the question becomes which way get back to the truck the quickest but I know I won't starve to death by morning. There is a block call the bigwoods but I don't ever hunt it because there are so many more places I can hunt in my Bass loafers and never wet a toe. Also the stupid dogs you leave inthe box going to the tree making all that racket won't ever say a word on the way out when you need them too.

okay, loan me one. , and one for the big buck i am going to get with a stick and a string to save me some time for looking for him, lol.

i could just track em.

i love the garmin. but, i dont think i should rely on one. not completely. for sure. if you can comp hunt on strange land without one, cant you not use one on land you know??

My Dad has been hunting twenty years with no tracking collars! Just a coon light and a coon dog! A year ago we bought a Garmin tracking collar and it's a very nice thing to have! Sometimes we use a shock collar when we hunt. But it's always fun to turn a dog loose and have no tracking devices on them and you have nothing to worry about!

Posted by Geminite on 06-02-2011 05:07 PM:

Kelley, I started out with just my dogs and an old "car battery" light. Hunted for probably a year without a tracking system because I couldnt afford one. I sure learned my dog pretty good, because I had to know when to jump in the truck and drive around because he was heading towards posted property, ect ect. Well its been 6 years since those days and I'm about a week from getting a Garmin. I cannot wait!!!!! I still know my dogs just as well, but it will save me a lot of walking and driving, to know where my dogs are; how close to a road, river, bridge, house, ect. I also won my first belt light a few summers ago and I love it, sometimes I use my led flashlight when it goes dead and I'm too lazy to charge it.

A garmin may not save your dog from a car, but it will definitely increase your chances of getting to him before he gets to that road. I should know, mine was smacked dead with one on before either of us knew what happened. But if we were just pleasure hunting, I woulda had my garmin out and had that knowledge that there was a road just beyond the trees.....Which brings up another valid point. During a competition hunt, when time out is called, its gonna save ya a heck of a lot of time to have a pin point where your dog is, when sometimes wiht a beep beep all you have is a "general area" and sometimes no idea what distance.

We have a Tracker Maxima tracking system, and a wildlife. Wildlife, Tracker and Marshall collars, also have a few Tri tronics which come very much in handy.

When you're hunting more than one dog at once, it's only in your favor to use the technology available! Will make things safer and easier!

As long as I know where my dogs are and where my truck is parked, I'm doing good!!

so is this a confidence issue with everyone's training, or a confidence issue that you know where your dog is and you are in control, or supposedly and it makes you feel better???? see, i dont want a dog that ranges out 5000 miles where i need a garmin or anything else to know when he is treed or what he is doing. is it a convienence, absolutely. is it easier to see something bad happening, absolutely. but for sure, i would like to have faith in my dog as i do my religion. i cant protect him from everything, just like i cant protect my son from everything no matter how much i want to.
fast dogs are nice in greyhound races but they get so caught up in the race they forget what they are racing for sometimes and go way out and run into trouble. jmo.
medium dog that cares about me just as much as he does that coon. that is my perfect dog.

i am worrying more without one, not like before, that is the problem. i have faith in my dog, but going out blind as a bat again just gets to me. i know we can do it, but, i love this dog. i guess it gives me a false sense of security at some point.

I don't want a far ranger neither to strike but once he strikes I don't want him worrying about me. I say go wherever you go if its swimthe river to the next county and it might just be. I'm like you , I can't prtect him from everything and don't intend to try. I don't hunt when the alligators are on the rampage and there ain't no trucks to worry about creaming them So , I think I done already did my part. Long years ago, an old fellow said unto me, "If you gonna realy coonhunt , you gonna need a pack a dogs . Dogs are like women, some run off, some chase trash off, some get runned over and some get gator ate and some just plain get too old. But if you gonna hunt you need a pack."
I do what i can but i can't help the rest.

I know my hound pretty good.I have one 8 yrs old be 9 in july. Trained and hunted her this all this long. I can strike her a millisecond in her strike and tree her on 2 milliseconds into her locate. I can tell you whats going on by the way she is or is not barking. Hot,cold track and all that jazz. I can also tell you before she barks on a coon by looking at the garmin but You dont have to stay glued to the screen every second your hunting. Which I dont really care what folks think about em. I'll never be without one unless all the sattalites go out I recken.
