Need advice

Have 20 month old bluetick that I just bought...guy claimed dog was started and would tree a easy coon...well had him out 5 times 1st time was
A dead hunt second time he lightly treed on a opossum and 3rd and 4th time dead hunt..will last night I hunted him again with my buddies female...and she treed a coon and my dog was there but not treed...what do I do...all the times he has hunted with finshed dogs ? Please repley good or bad Thanks for reading

Keep Hunting

Your idea and mine may be two different things. This dog may have never been hunted. The guy may be calling an easy coon a drag. If the dog is getting in the dark and not hanging around you that's a start. I would keep carrying it. I don't like one that runs in and doesn't say a word then trees with anoter dog. I feel they have to learn to work a track before they need to tree. Good luck and keep hunting

How long have you owned him? It sometimes takes dogs a few weeks to get accustom to a new home.

However, there is also the chance that you were taken advantage of by an unscrupulous seller.

The Gold standard to buying a coon hound is hunt with a dog before you buy it. If possible hunt with the dog several times.

If you have had him a fair amount of time, i would consider trying to treat him as an unstarted dog.

20 mo old . for me it cost just as much to feed a good dog as it does a want to be , i wont keep anything that does not show me desire or ability , i have a 7 mo old pup that will tree his own easy coon and make it sound good,,

O this dog will strike and open ahead of the dogs..and will get gone quick...for 20 months old he has more sense then any dog I ever own...don't bark at the house or box...loads with out asking...handles like a dream...this dog has everything to fool you into thinking he
Is a coondog...tho I only have had him a 2 weeks... Ran a drag and he work it to the tree...belly up but no bark...now when my female got
There he put ALOT on the tree but no bark

hunt him by him self , i would not let him depend on your female

I will do that..I actually know of a dual grand that was hunted his whole life by his self..with the exception of the night hunt

If you hunt him with another dog and you get a tree, tie him back and shoot the coon out to the other dog. Don't let him have the coon just lead him away afterwards. I wouldn't give him a coon till he will tree.

Like I said if anyone could come to Texas and hunt with me and him...they would think he is a coondog...I'm gonna give him a real Good try in the woods

Years ago, I hunted Walkers and it was commonplace to have one running at 6 months, maybe getting ahead of the old dogs at 9 months and never tree a lick till they were 18 months. I kind of expected it really. But I don't ever remember standing back from a tree with a scattergun and not getting an eye. Then they got to be bred like Labs. They might start treeing before they ever learned how to run. Which was the beginning of the end as far as I am concerned. Never the less a 2 year old dog is not a puppy anymore. You got that much time in him already so as sure as you give him away,he will start treeing the next week. You got to draw a hard line at some point though or else be hunting a 3 year old puppy. 24months will be September. You might even get a dollar or two out of him at that time of year when everybody is looking for a dog if he don't turn around.

work him on a caged coon today...treed like ole gauge..belly up toe nails on the wood...soo what yall think

i had an English pup i raised years ago that wouldnt open on the tree til she turned 2. she would track awsome and would be up on the tree when you got there...then something just clicked in her and she started blowing the top out....

really..

ok so do yall think i need to catch a coon and turn it loose...if so how do i do it ...i mean do i let him see me do it or do i cut the coon loose then go get him

my question would be when he didnt tree with the other dog did yall shine a coon? sounds like he is going decent why would you want to turn a caged coon loose for him? if he is doing decent keep hunting him alone. sounds like he just needs to be put in the woods without caged coons.

i would try one i like to let the coon have 20 or 30 min head start but dont walkem over to the track make him find it if it works out do it again maybe 2 or 3 times giving the coon bigger head start every time thats how i get my pups started and it works pretty good you can also try a feeder bucket if you think hes farther along if you can get some hot ones by himself that usually helps but bewarned dont do this to much or u will end up with a grand night feeder bucket champion like half the dogs ive seen you definitly want him to hunt the wild ones wild ones are best but gotta get started some where best of luck
