Working the hounds

cold trail video
I loaded seven hounds today and drove up on the mountain to work my hounds. I have two more weekends of bear season leftand time is getting short if I want to see another bear rug in my house.
I put those two younger dogs up on the truck with Ike and Choco, my ten and twelve year old rig dogs and the sir and grand sir of those two young ones. We ran into four groups of elk feeding near the road so I threw the whole bunch down and walked through them to check them once again before I have to take a blind rig on bear. In one group the bulls stunk so much I could have trailed them but not a peep out of the hounds, whereas a month ago those two young dogs load up every time I stuck them on elk so they are coming round.
I finally did strike a cold track but could never put my finger on the track to know what they had. Most likely it was a lion, as it lined out and walked a pretty straight line up the canyon. I shot this little video of the trail but pulled them after a mile cause of the big weekend and I didn't want to lose them with a bear tag in my pocket to a lion moving north. But it was a good day, checking them on elk and watching them open on a crappy track........

Good deal Dennis. Good luck with your tag. Did Matt ever get the big boy?

No Josh he didn't. As yous can see, not alot of access on the Forest and having Tribal lands and private below is a bad combination. Then the bowhunters suck what few big bears are on the mountain into their baits (which we have to stay away from) and there you go.
That country we hunted the day you were out with us is all snow drifted in, as we have had a record snow pack in the Duchesne River Drainage--think they are calling it a hundred and fifty year event.....so I probably won't even get to hunt where those bear bears are before it closes June 5th. I did, however, draw a moose tag for the fall so it might have to do...........

It was all I could handle to climb that rough terrain you call your stomping grounds. I can't imagine it with snow too. LOL !!
Good luck filing your tags. Tell Matt I said hi.

Well I have three days left of bear hunt Josh and I guess I'll go give those bears a little trouble. I most likely won't kill another bear but if the right one climbs who knows?
Keep'em Treed,
Ike
