-- Tree scoring ? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=429391)
Tree scoring ?
UKC seems to say that the decision to score close multiple trees seperate or as one should be made prior to shine time. HOW can this be done without lighting up the tree which is against the rules prior to shine time, and since this situation invoves the scoring of a tree is it a voting situation?
Case in point, dogs are split on two close trees, judge announces these trees will be scored as one and starts shine time. Once the lights come on it becomes obveous that the small tree that the judges dog is on is slick and broke off about 15 feet tall. When questioned the judge says since shine time has started the decision to score as one tree must stand.

I don't think the rule stops a judge from putting a light in the tree in order to determine one tree or separate trees. He isn't shining the tree to score it, he is just making a determination.
The way I have always done it is too bring the cast together, explain what we are doing, put the light up, make a decision and then ask if any cast member wants to question that decision. If not, it is then written in stone and will not be changed after shinetime starts.
The bottom line is that you can not change the decision after shinetime starts, right or wrong. Doing that is the beginning of the end every time.

Seems purty difficult for the cast members to make the decision wheather or not to question that decision without being able to put a light in the tree?

Not at all. Like I said, you get the cast together, explain what we are doing, put the judges light up, everyone looks. The judge makes his decision, anyone who disagrees has their chance to ask for the vote. All of this has to be finalized before we start shinetime.
I'm not aware of any official UKC answer to your question, but this way has always worked for our casts without ever a problem.

Good response. This is how it should be done.

Thats the fair way, sucks sometimes when the coon is clearly in the tree your dog is on and you agreed to score as one, LOL.
