Whelping??
Today is day 56 since the first mating. She has barely ate anything in the last 4 days. She's been mostly laying around through the day. Earlier today she started to do alot of running around and barking. Later this evening she went to her box and barely moved since. I went out to check her and she had a thick clear disharge. She is 7 and this is her first litter. The problem is that I want to go out and check on her periodicaly, but when she sees the light she comes out excited and thinks it's time to hunt!
Since this is her first litter, should I keep a check on her like i'm thinking, or should I just stay away until morning so that she stays calm?

I would keep a close eye on her, I just lost my female due to complications. We were watching her and took her to the vet at the first sign of touble, and she still died along with all the pups
Do you have a Area for her to Welp the pups ??? Welping box

bred female!!
If yesterday was her 56th day from time of breeding then what her body is doing is prepareing for birthing the puppies are moveing down into postion the body is preparing normal gestation is 62-65 days so just keep an eye on her and make sure that everything is fine with her. If she is getting out of the whelping box getting excited when you wlak out there to check on her thats a good sign check in the box to just to see if theres pups on the ground. as long as she is acting fine and is carring pups to term than just play the waiting game and don't worry if she comes out of the box when you go out there to check on her just means she is doing ok.
You mentioned she hasen't eaten much in the past few days....hopefully she is drinking water ? Dehydration is definitely something you want to avoid....With my last litter, I kind of supllimented the diet the last couple weeks with some scrambled eggs w/cheddar cheese....yogurt, even a dairy egg protein type milkshake here and there.....and momma never refused that.......It really seemed to help her produce a great milk supply and the milkeshakes helped keep her hydrated and motivated during delivery....
Good luck with the litter !!!

Female
Don't know what it is about the Happy Jack Milk Aid but my female would wolf down her food when I put it on it. I would pull about 8-9 ml in a syringe and put it over the top of her dry feed & she would eat immediately. It really helped w/ her milk also.

Her temp. is still high (though still below normal) The temp change your watching for should be 99.0 or less. Take her temp. often, cause her temp. can go down and then go back up and you may miss the temp. drop. Although mine always went down and stayed down for a day or more. Since this is her first litter, you really have nothing to gauge your info. on with her, all dogs are different. DO NOT leave her alone to just 'let nature take it's course'. If you love and value that dog, then bed yourself down close to her and stay there. Trust me, when it is time to have the pups, she will need you there, she is a first time mom and may not know what to do. I've had females that were scared of their firstborn pups and it took alot of working and coaching to get them to understand what needs done.

My wife or I have been with her almost nonstop since last night. Her mood changes back and forth constantly. She seems to be doing good so far though. She is still having a little discharge now and then. This is the first time in alot of years since i've been through this process. My nerve rating is just below the day I got married and when the kids were born...lol
Thanks for all the advice.
And believe me, the anticipation of those pups coming is darn nerve-racking....I have a litter due on the 4th of july, and I'm already a basket case !!! But I do my best to talk softly and try to be as cool as i can, with the hopes that it ease her stress level.......__________________

Still high, trust me, you will know when it takes a nose dive. She will lay still or dig around, but mostly ignore you. Just keep watching for contractions. Once the temp goes down, I figure 12 hrs. or so til first pup. Nerve wracking it is, I hate beer, but Autumn's last litter had me drinking the nasty slop 1 can after another for the 2 days before her due date AND the 3 days she went past her due date! She finally decided to deliver them in a super blizzard at 6:30 am, after I had been up most of the night with her.
Rotten b*tch!!!

If you take her temperature every 12 hours, you will certainly catch the drop. If she's only at 56 days, you've got at least a few more days before anything happens.
First signs of first stage labor are restlessness, nesting (digging, circling, digging, moving bedding around) and panting. When that happens it's time to stay with her.
First stage labor can be very short, or can last 12 - 24 hours. Second stage labor is when she get serious about nesting, starts having contractions, and pants very hard. Puppies should follow shortly!
Good luck, and have fun!

Temp dropped to 99.4 this morning and she was doing a little more nesting. Now temp is back up to 99.9. She is also producing more milk. Hopefully not to much longer.

Nothing yet! Her belly dropped alot lower in the back yesterday morning and her temp dropped to 98, but nothing yet. I was really starting to second guess things, so today I went and bought a stethascope...lol We heard some heartbeats, so I hope it wont be much longer.

The dam is directly out of Skuna River Fred and the sire is my sons Raging Ben dog. He was sired by Parsley's Raging Bull(who is also the grandsire on the dams side), and he's all Finley River on the bottom. He was always pleasure hunted so he doesn't have any titles. Since they're both getting a little older(7), and we like them both really well, we wanted to try and keep a little of the bloodline going. Hopefully they will be able to drive a hard track, and I can just about guarantee they will be extremely LOUD! Also, between the two of them there will be three shots of Stylish Clover in their 4 Generation Ped. Hopefully it will all work out...lol
