how do you guys train your dogs to heel while walking him on a leash and how to come?

I teach mine to heel with a small switch with leaves on it so it makes alot of rackett when I swat them with it,when I'm leading them if they put tension on the lead they get swatted and told to heel works real well they'll learn fast.As far as getting them to come when called was a challenge for me I had to get a buddy of mine that trains dogs to help with this.What he told me seemed to work,get a long check line about 30' long,put your dog on the line and go for a walk,give the here command if the dog does not respond immediatly snatch him to you.After you do this every day for about 15 mins a day they'll understand .Once the get trained to the rope start useing a training collar,make sure you condition your dog to the collar first and understand how dog reacts to it.Place the collar on the dog if he dosent respond to the here command give him a little bump with the collar to remind him that here means come here.Do this everyday for several weeks and they'll learn.Every dog is going to be different.I've seen dogs you could call off of a track or tree,if mines treed or working a track you can't call him off,but if he's just out hunting and he can hear me he'll stop and come to me.Good luck with them it's a long hard process but it sure is nice to have a handle on your dog.

I'm somewhat like SMH. They get to wanting to come for a treat, or petting free ranging. Sooner or later comehyar is not a request, it is a command and the rope gets used. When the rope runs out of line the tritronics goes on. Embellish that with the Sit command. Sit doesn't get said near as ofter as comehyar so they pay more attention to that. Also if necesssary the tritronics goes to high immediately so if the act like they don't hear it, it will knock the legs out from under them and they find themselves Sitting. I don't own a tritronics, I borrow one for a couple of weeks and work them in a fenced in yard. A pup has built in instinkt to get out of range starting on low in my observations. Anyway if a dog can't grasp sit means sit in about three episodes on high you really got a dumb dog. I have had dogs get to a busy highway and saved many of them with sit while on the edge of the road. Try yelling come and see what happens.
Heal command starts with a tired out pup on a lead. To me heal can be two steps in front, right or left side, or directly behind. A dog is easier to handle knowing heal on the leash but he has not realy learned it till off the leash. Also teach "load up" and heal at the same time. It has saved me alot of being turned around to tell a dog to "loadup" and "heal" a few steps in front of me and follow him back to the truck. Now that takes faith in a dog and he might be 3 or 5 years old before you can count on it, but it is good to have one like that.

It all starts when they are little pups. check cords and firm commands. Don't wait till you hunt it to teach these things. just like loading. All this is taught in the yard
