A run would be cheaper to install, and would keep the hound more fit with more room to run. However,,,,on a run the dog would burn more energy and therefore would eat more dogfood. I am comparing to having the dog in a kennel. I have found that dogs on runs are more in shape. I f I had the room and did not care if dog poop was widespread I'd have my 8 on runs. But I don't so therefore they are in a kennel. Hope this helped.

We have a back yard that is fenced in for my hunting jack russell terriers BUT inside the yard we also have some smaller 6x6x4 chain link kennels to secure them when we are gone. We set the chain link on top of railroad timbers and put about 6 inches of small gravels in it to discurrage digging. We also have an A-frame tarp covering the tops of the kennels for shade and to keep the kennel dry. Works great.
My back yard is fenced in with 4' tall wire fencing. It works fine, because I run a hot wire around the inside. I don't break pups to this fence until they start bothering the house or start getting out. I turn my hounds loose in it when I get off of work at 5:30. They stay there (if I'm not working with them) until dark or until we go hunting. I do this year round. It does not affect my hounds in the woods, they are not afraid of other fences. I have a 2 year old hound that has been in this system since he was a pup and has NEVER gotten out. I don't leave them in this pen all day, but I would'nt be afraid to. The only reason I don't is because my wife does'nt want me to kill all the grass. This is the system that works for me, get suggestions like you are and decide for yourself what works for you.
