A Missouri Blue Rock Thread!(for you guys disrupting the scout thread)

Elmo was right on with his Rock info. There were several devoted Bluetick men behind the breeding and raising of ROCK. But make no mistake JJ put him on the map.

I'm sure JJ will eventually get on here and tell you a little about Rock. You'll have to excuse him he's a little light in conversation!! lol...

Rock

I have dogs that I own that I've based my breeding off of Rock.
First dog was NTCH Missouri Blue Rock II. He was out of Rock and GRNTCH CH Casey's MO Bl Hammer III, female. He is deceased. I have a female (Mandy) out of Rock and NTCH CH Williams' Bl Lacy. Lacy is out of GRNT CH Northern Bl Curly. Mandy still lives. I now have a female, NTCH Wyatts' Moniteau Creek Bl Roxann (4 wins) out of Rock II and Mandy, which I have pups out of her and Lightning.

Posted by charlie wyatt on 02-05-2005 03:44 AM:

also I have crossed Roxann with GRNTCH Bakers' Perche Creek Bo. Bo is out of Levi.

He shows Rock in his 3 gen ped (http://www.dixieblackntans.com/breezey.htm) and has treed w/the other dogs at 7 months old. I hunt B&Ts, but J.J. has some nice blue dogs. I really like what I've seen out of Ray. I like how he can drift a track and get treed.

From what J.J. has told me about Rock, he has become the most interesting blue dog to me. I wish J.J. would get up here and post a list of Rock's wins. Just as impressive is the number of coondogs he reproduced.

A son of Rock won GrNite Fri Night at the Winter Classic, so he is still making his mark, too. Just wish J.J. had some semen frozen on Rock. This has been a real interesting thread for someone not really versed in the breed.

Jason, I'm glad you are liking that Ray pup. A buddy of mine has a littermate to yours that has been running and treeing since 5 months old! Rock definetely left his impact on the bluetick breed. JJ said many times he wishes he had been in a better position to promote ROCK. It's hard telling what would have happened if a dog like that had put 500 pups on the ground. And i promise you are not the only one that wishing their were some semen saved on him. I've been comtemplating saving some semen on Lightning before it gets to late.

Yes Aaron it took a while, but you can give the credit to Chris Baker. He told me to go in and check it out.

Rock

you guy also interested. JJ also has a dog out of Rock II and Mandy. GRNTCH Rocks' Wild Rebel. Not for sure on how pups are doing out of him. But hopefully I will have one in the next few months if a female is bred.

J.J. and Rock

JJ's computer is down, so I printed these threads for him and took it over when we went hunting last night. I'm sure when his computer is fixed he'll get on here and give us the low down on Rock and his offspring.

Doesn't JJ have a son directly out of Rock? My pup's papers show Rock-It (a son of Rock) on the bottom side. Do you know how Rock-It reproduced? We sent the papers off, so I don't know how many pups are out of Rock-It or how many made anything. Does anyone know? Is Rock-It still throwing pups?

I went hunting with my pups mom. She is out of Rock-It. She is a really nice treedog. I like her tree style a lot. I think JJ said Rock-It was a real hard treedog, too. I just hope my pup trees as hard as his mom, b/c she can really spit-em out!

Jason JJ can answer those questions better than me, I beleive Rock-It to have 15 pups on the ground and I have not heard of anyone that was displeased about the pups.

Posted by J.J. CALLAHAN on 02-09-2005 12:40 AM:

I'm back!!!

I was surprised when Jason told me about all the talk and questions about ol' Rock.
I bought Rock in '92 from phil smith in ala. he half owned him with Richard cassey. Rock had only been bred twice when i got him. this is how i came to be friends and partners with jay williams and louis milliken. they both owned pups out of Rock's first litter.
That litter produced 2 grand nites ark Hollow blue ghost(Jeff Leaper,Mo.) Milliken's misty blue(louis milliken, now in N.C.)
I went hunting with misty while louis was living in Louissana she was the real deal!!The ghost dog also happens to be Ray's grand sire.
Jay , Louis and myself have used rock as the base for everything we have hunted for the past 12 years. I have only hunted one dog in the past 12 years that wasn't out of Rock everyting else was out of him or females breed to him.
i used to pick with Jay and say that Rock is the best kept secret in the Blue tick Breed, who would think that 4 years after his passing that people would be asking about him on the message board!
Before I forget congrats Arron on your win at the Classic with Lightning. It's almost ironic that he did this at 9. thats how old rock was when he won the '97 N.C. State championship.
It must be something in the genes with these dogs,Rock died on the chain at 13(still giong 2 nights a week) Rock-It is 11, lightining is 9 rebel is 8 spanky died at 11.They seem to stay around for a while.
Thanks for all the intrest it's brought back a lot of good memories and caused me to remember that Rock is the dog that pushed me to get involved in the big hunts and introduced me to the best friends that i have today.

I just got my papers back on my Ray pup today. He is out of JJ's Blueberry female on the bottom side. She is out of Rock-It. She has a first, but I don't think she's been in many hunts. Rock-It has 15 pups and no titled dogs. Don't know anything about the rest of them.

Blue Ice: I don't know if I'd say I'm "converted" b/c I still drag those black dogs along. I like the Ray pup b/c he's got brains and I like what I've seen out of his parents when I hunted with them.

tell us more about rock

Since I have disrupted the Scout thread....I guess I will ask my questions again here....lol....Seems like there was just as much interest in the ole rock dog as the scout dog...two good dogs for sure..but I think I know who would have won on a hunt off...lol...

on a serious note, I would love to hear anything from anyone who has had a dog out of rock or that has rock in their pedigree.............or anyone who has hunted rock....i would like to know how he treed and how he was on hot coon and wild coon.....what was his speciality?....He had to be all COONDOG to produce as good as he did...11.7%.....and I hear he won alot too.....could someone post the hunts he won...............

What about rock's lightning dog...he has made his mark in the south....

lets here some more about the litter rock was in too..

was spanky and rock it in same litter and what about rebel and lightning who were the other big dogs in their litters?

i see the blueberry pup out of rock it got some praise but
why did rock it not have any titled dogs out of 15 pups....(from an above post)...did the owners just not hunt the dogs much or did most of the litters die young?...i dont understand it...who was the dam of rock it ? and who was he bred to for these pups?.....the only thing that makes sense to me is that some other blue breeder must have bought the rock it pups and kept them on the chain so to reduce the breeding competion ....i guess it was the jet boys not wanting to have the spot light stolen from them since the jet blood was not concentrated enough in the line to make it all the hunt ablity attributed to the jet line....

anyways i just had to throw that one in there.......

what is the best dog rock produced.....male and female......

is there a female out there who is double rock bred who has a litter on the ground or can put one there......i would love to see her crossed to a double rock bred sire in the future...if it has not already been done....any comments?

what dog onthe ground now has the strongest rock blood and traits........

charlie, what is mandy out of and tell me about rock II....and the rebel dog is he still going to the woods? have you hunted with rock?....tell me what you thought if so....

nt.ch.moniteau creek blue roxanne(4 wins) and moniteau creek blue princess owned by charlie wyatt are both double rock bred. both were bred to lighting and have pups on the ground now. my prince dog was welped by princess and sired by my smoke III dog. prince is triple rock bred with some levi, fly III, krooked creek scamp, and northern blue curley thrown in for good measure. i have hunted with rock and his pups mentioned in this thread along with several other rock pups and grand pups, one thing that most of these dogs have in common is their uncanny ability to know where coons are,and the ability to take any type of track and put a coon at the end of it.lighting and misty have/had the ability to 'produce' coons where other dogs didn't know there was one.ray and rock take/took their tracks as they came, with the ability to move good and bad tracks faster than most.the above mentioned dogs are/were also very independent(some more than others) and all are/were very good tree dogs that don't waste a lot of time treeing racoons. jj, louis and i have been kennel partners breeding this line of dogs since the early 1990's, and have added aaron to the team in the last two years. we have managed to produce a few nice coon dogs and make many many good friends durning that time.hopefully the next 15 years will bring more and better dog as well as friends!

Thanks for your post, Jay. I am glad to here that lightning has been bred to Roxanne and Princess (how old is she and how many wins). Are the double rock bred females closer to rock than the triple bred dogs you have...Just wondering who had the female with the most Rock blood... Do you think charlie is gonna try to grand out the Roxanne dog? I hope the pups off that cross with her and lightning are doing good...how old are they and are they started yet? or are they out there winning too? Good luck with it buddy.....keep it up : ) Have yous guys got a website with your peds on it? I would love to see what yall got where.

JJ, i bet you kept a doulbe rock bred female....have you got one...are you breeding her? Who to if so? What is going on with the breeding program now in the south? ....Is Ray the key with his Rock background or have you got another slamming male that you make crosses with too? ....You kept Rock such a secret like you said in your post....one is left wondering.....lol ....the dangerous ones or should i say the guys to watch out for kind of come up from behind and slam em all like they didnt know what hit them......when you hold off it, makes us anxious....lol

I am a redbone hunter, but i have always been thouroughly impressed with the uniformity of the Rock line of dogs! I could go to JJ's kennel close my eyes and pick a dog out of a kennel full of hounds, and any one of them could go out and tree coon with style! Ive hunted with many other pups out of big-name Bluetick hounds that have sired hundreds and i dont think if you put all the good ones together of any one other stud they could equal the # of top notch hounds i have seen out of this line with way fewer #'s!

Thanks Fireball. I 've seen a few of your red dogs that ain't to bad either. Tell Kate I said hey!

Rock Pups

These Rock dogs are gonna be around a long time. Unfortunately there are only 2 direct sons of Rock still living, Rock-It(11) and Lightning(9) But with getting 2 or three generations away from Rock we are able to Stack him up several times in those pedigrees.

It's only gonna get easier to find a Double Rock dog. Most of the pups on the ground right now out of Lightning are doubled ROCK.
Princess, Roxanne, Sally(the Rock-it female)
and we have 3 females bred this way that are booked in the spring. Two are out of Roxanne and Perche creek BO(Levi x Cricket)
and another female is a full cousin to Ray.

Several Rock bred females have been bred to Ray as well.

There will Be Rock dogs in the winners circle for a long time to come.

Hey Todd, don't worry you won't have to hunt those redbones for much longer, there should be a Lightning pup tied up in ohio here pretty soon.
I just can't wait until I can tell people that the 2 guys that bumped heads last year in purina are both hunting Lightning pups.
(Todd and Phillip) You two will never be the same.

Posted by Fireball on 02-10-2005 02:53 AM:

Bring it on A.L., i will hunt anything i can win with!.....obviously this line can do just that!
YOU NEED TO GET SOME FROZEN SEMEN BEFORE ITS TOO LATE! which cross am i getting one out of?? I would like one out of what Jay was talking about... Lightening/Prince's mom?? Too bad i would have to get a walker to make my kennel red-white-and blue!
Keep them grand nite wins like Winter Classic coming.......makes my new pup worth more!
I think these Tar-heel/ex-cajun's/missouri mad man got something really good going here and seems to be going nowhere but up! Above all they are likeable guys(something that the sport lacks at times) that seem to be working for one common goal...a superior Bluetick hound!
Being a man of a differnent breed, i can honestly say you Bluetickers sure seem to be on the rise the last 10 yrs more than any other breed! I aplaud you all! Todd

Posted by chris baker on 02-10-2005 03:13 AM:

Isn't Charly's mandy female a direct Daughter of old Rock? And I think she is double Rock bred.

On a sorry note for the Jet guys the little Tilly female I got from Terry Estill was killed this mourning by 3 pit bulls after we couldn't get her and Zack's pup back last night. She was a good little dog and was going to be in the hunts this year to finish her out.
