Got the coon but leaves the tree!
What can I do to make this dog stay treed. She is 18 mo. old deadly accurate. Treed one last night byherself when we get there shes runnin around . I led her back to the tree she started treein a little. Treed one tonite by herself when we where goin to her got about 50 yards from her she leaves. I went back in the direction she was treed and she went back ,showed the tree and I found the coon. also when hunting with other dogs she will usuallyrun track and go to the tree and when another dog trees she will leave, and stand about 30 or 40 yards away. anybody got anything?

mine does the same exact thing and she is 16 months old, i just keep getting to her quick as i can and tying her. and leave her and make her tree awhile. She will get it eventually. when you start knockin coons out to her she will stay better. Just takes time , its a confidence thing.coons make a difference though. you will just have to pet her up real good till season comes in till you can knock some out to her.So just keep getting to her as quick as you can and gettin her tied to the tree and pet her up real good. She will stay better and better.

I’m not trying to be a smart a$$ but the truth is you can teach a dog to do many things but staying treed is not one of them. Most likely after trying everything you and everyone else can think of you’ll still have a dog that you can never fully trust to stay treed. Nobody can make a dog hunt or stay treed if the dog don’t have the desire to do so. I’m not saying that the dog won’t tree a coon in some sort of fashion and I’m not saying that the dog won’t get better with age and stay treed at times, but I am saying that most likely you will never be sure if the dog will stay treed or not. About all you can do is continue to hunt the dog and hope that dog starts sticking to the tree but it will only happen if the dog has the desire to stay treed. You can’t teach the dog to stay treed and you can’t beat it into the dog, the dog has to have the desire to stay treed. I wish I had the magic answer but there’s not much you can do for a dog that don’t want to stay treed. Good luck with your dog.

This is how i would tackle this problem: Hunt her by herself. When she trees start to her. If she quits treeing, cut your light off and wait until she gets back on the tree before your proceed. If she does it again, do the same thing. Eventually, she will learn to stay until you get there. When you do, reward her with praise.

you can definately teach a dog to stay treed...yes it does take patience. some are more natural, some need more teaching.
As already mentioned, tie her to the tree as much as possible and leave her longer and longer, rewarding her for being there (whatever your method - praising, shooting out coons, both, etc.).
One other thing you can do is trap a live one and run drags with the coon in the trap (like a field trial). When she gets to the tree, be sure she can see the coon - at first even dangling it real low. Progressively put it higher and higher until it is as high as you can get. Each time, tie her to the tree and have her tree as long as possible before she gets bored or too tired. It will be a patient progression. Just don't give up on her. A lot of dog become "cull" dogs, not because the dog didn't do their job, but because the owner/training didn't stick with theirs.
