Dog Overheating

What causes it and what is the best way to fix it.
My dogs get hunted 3 to 4 nights a week and not over weight but not skin and bones ether.

We made 1 drop last night . It was a good track but they carried it a ways before they treed it.
When we got to the tree, my male was standing on it and my female was there but not in full force. She would go to the tree then come to you and lay down.

Now it was thick where we were at and the air was full of pollen, I had a hard time breathing my self....

I would still like to trim some weight off both of them but not sure the best way to do it.
I feed 21/12 Sportmix and they get about a quart a day.
I was feeding 26/18 Pride but switched for the warm weather. The Pride keeps them in good shape when it cold and hard hunting but with only making 1 or 2 drops now they seemed to put on extra weight.

Dog food can contribute,it's also in some dogs genes they just get hot and some don't also what I have seen that will help overheating and dehydration's is a product called k9superfuel go to k9power.com. my male will over heat too. i been feeding the diamond nat. i was told corn in dog food
will make them over heat. i can not see much difference he still will get overheated some at the tree. if there is a creek around tha tree he will go back and forth from tree to water. that dont work to good on a hunt. does any one have any ideas on some thing to give him to help maybe supplements? he is pretty good shape

You need to feed much more fat than what you are currently feeding. Dogs get their energy from fat, if you reduce it, they peter out much quicker. Reduce the carbs you are feeding. They have the same negative side effects for dogs as they do humans.....water retention. Take a blanket, hose it down, wrap yourself in it and try and run down the road a few times and you'll see how quickly you heat up. The same happens to the dog when it retains too much water in their muscles. Hunt them on an empty stomach and pull water from them a few hours before you go out. Allot of things have to happen for your dog to hunt at its maximum. You will never keep a dog from overheating, period. They all will, they aren't machines. Your best hope is extending the over heating point, dealing with it, and getting back to kicking azz. Feed, water, specific objectives, and the ability to tweak for each hound will go along way.

Go back to the pride and cut them off a little for weight control.With only 12% fat(energy) you are making the dog work.Alot of people don't realize that dogs get their energy from the fat content.So by cutting that back on them you are only making them have to use body stored reserves to make energy,thus causing the overheating(barring other issues such as worms)

I guy I got the female from only used 26/18 Pride and had the same result. No problems in cool nights or after warm weather.
I know feeding the right feed is important but none of the others seem to be having the same problem.

Reduce the carbs/grains. You often hear that "all dogs are different". Usually it is a punchline used to justify feeding whatever they choose. But there is a bit of truth to it. Dogs biochemistry is pretty well documented in terms of them operating the same. The variance is in the degree with which they function. The greater the individual variance, the more the owner will be required to know to compensate and bring about maximum performance. But, carbs are carbs and grains are grains. They have the same effect on every dog. Don't misconstrue what I am saying to remove all carbs, they do provide required components for a dogs health. I guess what I should say is learn about them and realize that a dogs system does not process carbs very well unless they are broken down or pre-digested. When you arm yourself with that info, you'll realize how closely related most popular coonhound feeds are in the sense that you get what you pay for. Overheating is caused by many things, most often it comes from poor quality feed. But figuring out what is causing it is pert near impossible via the pc. It is sorta like a 3D chess match. One move causes effects that in turn cause other effects. Thats why it is always much simpler to feed the best you can afford, it narrows down allot of the negative synergistic effects in overheating. If you can't afford to feed a true performance type diet, then one will always deal with overheating and eventually learn to make excuses for it. (No offense intended) I have babbled on about controlling what you can to put the best package you can out there. Diet and understanding performance dogs is one way to stay above your competition as most seem helll bent on feeding the cheapest they can. No sense in doing it yourself unless you are ok with your results.

I sell dog food and think I give mine the a good feed, not the cheapest by no means, but I'm sure their is better out there.

After talking to Potomac and hearing the results he has from the K9 Super fuel, I decided to check into it. When I read what it can do for your hound, I ordered some to try. Not only do I think it will help Flakey but I also think it will help Diesel with his allergy's.

Just ask Bryan Whitted what he feeds UKC WORLD CH MR. CLEAN and ask him if he gets" hot" while hunting him.

I guarantee he gets hot. I would also suspect that Bryan is well versed enough to know the other aspects involved with minimizing recovery time and most won't recognize when he does start getting heated because he probably has him recovered within a few minutes. Bryan is seasoned enough to know not to announce to the cast when he is either. Like I said earlier, if you can stay a step or two ahead of the competition in areas that you can control, it most certainly is a wise choice for the nite hunt fan. Brian has proven he is one of the best. There is no magic in a bag but it certainly helps starting off on the right foot, a good dog, and being a good enough houndsman (putting it all together) that it leaves your peers asking how he is always in the running. It doesn't just come from a bag.

24/20. You will have issues with the corn though. High in carbs and your dog will retain water and seek it out. Will be hard to keep him hydrated without being too hydrated. It has a good energy source though in the chicken fat. Chicken fat is my all time favorite for fuel source.

The pro series of pride is chicken base, 21/17 and 26/20. Someone told me that over indulgences of chicken base feeds could interfere with the heat cycle of females.....

Sportmix does have chicken by-products added but not like the Pride.

Regular Pride has porcine meat added which will make them drink more..

Looking at premium feeds and their content can get so confusing, it will make you pull your hair out.......

Nah, once you get a good idea of how the dogs system works, protein, fat, carbs, fat adaption, hydration, lactic acid, amino acids, etc. you'll quickly realize that most of the brands on here with the biggest cheerleaders aren't what they are cracked up to be. It will reduce your options to the point of having about 4 or 5 that are worth it without going broke. Then you'll get a kick out of watching folks go from one $20 bag a junk to another $20 bag of junk and claim it is the best ever. The ingredients and formulas are very similar but some will swear that the brewers rice in their feed is much better than the brewers rice in other feeds and so it goes with other ingredients. If the ingredients are similar, the quality will be just as similar. Upgrade, hunt hard, and you'll see the difference. I have lost a good dog or two by pushing the limits on nutrition and performance. I have certainly put in the time and learned the hard way. I hate to see folks make similar mistakes when I can help them shorten their learning curve by years.

Get a feed that is soy free the corn in dog feed will flat burn some dogs up it dose me male dog bad.
