worth of a dog ?
I was talking to an old friend of mine the other day and we were talking about dog breeds and stuff. He said that if you take two identical dogs, alike in every single aspect except one is a walker and one is a different breed. The dog that is a different breed will normally sell for more money than the walker dog. He said that you can get a good walker dog for cheaper than you can get a good dog from any other bloodline. Even if the dogs are identical in every way except the breed. He said it's because there are so many walker dogs out there and so there are a lot of good walker dogs but a good dog from any other breed is more "rare" ? LOL what do yall think ?
I think hes crazy.Probably the same buddy that told you your problem was kitten coon right now LOL.. From what I've saw the culls bring about the same in every breed.. A GOOD ONE IS GONNA BE HIGH in every breed..The good ones aint forsale much..just today I saw a 2yr old walker on another board for 14000...Then below it.I saw a 1yr old for 12000? Now how many other breeds you know asking that kinda price for a dog?

I have seen this trend, just go look at the different breeds classifieds. I haven't looked in a while but I noticed before that a leopard hound that trees it's own coon is automatically a $2500 dog. The other breeds seem to also be like that to a lesser extent, simply supply and demand.

I don't care what breed the dog is or how much was spent on it. If you don't put the time in them through the week ain't to many of them worth much.
I will tell you your friend was right though. A decent walker dog are pretty common anymore. Now the solid ones will cost you.
I’d say there is some truth in your friend’s statement. The really good ones in any breed are going to cost if you can buy them. That’s not to say they are worth the asking price but the price will be high. I would say that if a person had a fairly good dog of a breed other than a walker they could sell it pretty quick for a good hunk of money, most likely more than the dog is worth. I hunted with a walker dog that sold for ten thousand dollars back in the 80’s. The owner was very proud of that dog and was happy to own him. When the dog was turned loose he never stopped barking until he was put back in the truck and you couldn’t tie him to a tree. That dog was a complete idiot and the man that paid that much for him was an idiot also, but what ever floats your boat I guess. The point is that someone put a big price on an idiot and another idiot paid it but that don’t make the dog good.

Hound folks don't seem to realize how good we have it. I also own Chesapeake Bay Retreivers. I pay $1200-$1500 for a well bred 8 week old puppy. Why? Because that's what puppy's cost in a rarer breed. Not everybody that owns them breeds them and you need to get on a waiting list for a puppy. Some of the fofo breeds cost way more- $3,000 for a Caviler King Charles Spaniel, IF you can find one. Try to buy an old Chessie that's winning shows or field trials and you're talking 10K minimum. Hounds are cheaper due to supply and demand and because we are selling to different folks.
I'm always amazed and happy to see hound folks giving a kid a puppy. That's what will keep this sport alive.

I think it is the opposite. A walker dog is worth 20% more. Had a buddy trying to sell a Gr.Nt. english dog that was 3 years old. He wanted 3500 and a pup no one would bite. 3500 for a walker dog is a 2 year old with a first and its money won. You will seldom see an off breed dog for sale on here for much more if any above that 3500, but you go to the walker board and it is full of 5000 dollar dogs.

There are more big money guys in the walker breed than all of the other breeds combined. You guess what that means.

People want what wins, it's really that simple. These guys that shell out thousands of dollars for walker dogs can't all be idiots.
GR NT CH. MICHIGAN SWAMP ROOSTER WAS SOLD FOR $40,000. HE SOLD FOR THAT BECAUSE HE WAS A BETTER ENGLISH DOG.
NOT BECAUSE HE WAS A BETTER COONDOG.
IF HE HAD OF BEEN A WALKER HE WOULD OF NEVER SOLD FOR THAT OR GAINED THE STUD NAME HE DID.

imo coonhunters are cheap and know how much work and money it takes to make a good one almost any other breed brings more as a pup even a spca dogs cost more than the average coonhound pup i agree most good ones aren't forsale but alot of average coonhounds are forsale just the way i see it
Worth 1/2 as much
Dog A strike in one minute and trees two minutes later. Dog B strikes on same track in 2 minutes and gets to tree in 4 minutes. He is half as fast so he is worth half as much. OR
Dog A and B strike together A gets first cause B handler has a drawl. They come across sideways to them and they cannot tell who is ahead. Dog B hits a locate and before he gets it out dog A also locates. Handler B is also a stutterer and is excited , T T T T T Tree --, by the time he gets it out A gets first tree. B gets second so he is only worth 1/2 as much??
kid i know said it best when talking about buying a redbone pup...
my buddy said why you want a red dog? good ones seem to be real few and real far between...
the kid said i know! ive NEVER seen a good redbone! thats why i want one...then when its a coon dog, i'll REALLY have somethin!!
we laugh about it all the time...last we knew hes still messing with red dogs tryin to get him somethin real special...
if people paid for coon dog pups like they do for toy dog breeds, we'd all be rich...or poor...lol....toy dog breeds that are registered sell for 500-1000 all day long..many pups upto 1500! trying to sell a coon hound pup with good breeding and all that from a sire and dam that are both coon dogs, 500$ a pup is pushing it most times..

Had a friend that went from walkers to black N tans in the 80's and was told by a well known non walker breeder to price his dogs outrageously high so the buyer really thought he was getting something. I have a pic somewhere of a BT dog he sold to an ohio pig farmer for 5000 stuck on a snag in the river one night with No coon and him throwing things at the dog to try and get him back to shore with me LMAO at him and telling him not to hurt that 5000 dollar black dog. As for all the ten thousand dollar dogs and up I would really need to see the check and then the bank account bal so I could see if any money was kicked back later, JMHO
i will tell you a good one aint cheap...we have bout twenty thousand in 4 of our dogs and i will tell you they are the best ive been in the woods with you get what you pay for if you ask me...you have to a little money to do nice in this sport now it used to be a poor mans sport but not anymore...

I think a lot of it has to do with patience and wisdom. I have tried out a $2,500 dog that was totally worthless in my opinion and i was gave a dog that was nothing great but sure did tree a bunch of coons.
