Dog Energy Supplements
is stuff like this really healthy for our hounds.
seems to me if they are fed right from the start and have good breeding things like this are not neccesary....any thoughts

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.
i take a vitamine/mineral supplement. my wife is a nurse and she said that she has seen doctors take large quantities of suppliments. i just had to put my dog down from old age. i wondered then if she would have lived longer if i had given her a suppliment. i can not believe commercial dog food is wholesome. it's adequate but that's it.

For six months I have been giving mine Lixitonic only because a friend gave me a half gallon of it. It looks and smeels just like Livitamin that a vet I worked for 40 years ago would send home 4 ounces for a recouperating dog. I've only been giving about 3cc everyother day or so but this is the first crop of pups that stayed fat in the fast growth stage. I recon that is what helped but it might have just been that litter. It's Liver and vitamin or Iron and vitamins. They love it. I had one show signs of mange anyway so it is not a magic formula.
I bought a small jar of Dog Forte at the Grand American this year to try out at some point. The plan was to try it on the deer dogs when season came back around, but I recently brought home a couple dogs that needed to put on some weight. I used it on the male for a week, and have been using it on the racier built (and hard to keep) female for the past two. It really helped improve their coats, and both have filled out to a good size without having the potbelly look. As far as energy goes, they have plenty of "go" even in the increased temperatures. I plan on using it on my NTCH female as well after she has whelped her pups, and am interested to see what it will do for a dog really being hunted hard. A little pricey, but I like what I see so far. The added protein seems to have helped with muscle tone as well...

what i am starting to see is guys giving hounds this kinda stuff to make up for crapy feed. guys buying cheap and i mean cheap feed and dogs not maintaing weight so they are looking to stuff like this to put"fat" on the dog.i have seen this trend more and more the last year or so.

I personally used the Dog Forte on top of my regular feed, Diamond Extreme Athlete. Pretty high fat/protein food, so it's not something I would do all the time but it gave me better results than just loading them up on a pile of food.

Feed a quality feed like NATIVE and you wont have to use supplements!

The truth
The truth is vitamins and supplements do not work to their full extent unless they have good food to work with. And the body rejects any excess it doesn't need. Over 40 yrs experience has taught me to feed good feed and supplement lightly. I use fish oil tabs couple times a week, vita tabs couple times a week and because I get lots of eggs from buddies chickens the dogs get scrambled eggs a couple times a week. Any left over beef, chicken, turkey or deer meat also goes to dogs. Also leftover vegetables. That way if they are lacking anything a variety should accomodate their needs. But supplement lightly the dog food being the main fare. That is my experience.

the stuff i posted a link to,the k-9 superfuel, with some research i found it was a supplement best suited for after hard excercise to help the body rebuild after it had been broke down.seems like a good suplement to give to big game hounds after a hard day on the mountain or fox/deer hound after running deer all day or fox after all night running in a pen and a coon hound hunted all night. the key seems to be feeding them within 30 minutes after the hard excercise

You are exactly right. 30 minutes is key. Any longer and you risk allowing the dog to go into a catabolic state. I usually feed at the 15 minute or so mark.

yea thats a bit of information i just learned yesterday and somthing i will have to work on correcting,i will have to cary food/suplement with me when i hunt them hard cuz i live about an hour away from where i hunt.i always feed them when i get home but it seems to be a little too late to really help them.
